Why is English Phonetics and Phonology important for an English teacher?

Due to the importance of speaking English as a mean of communication

everyday more people speak and use English than any other language.

Moreover, English is the international language of diplomacy, business,

science, technology, banking, tourism, Hollywood films and arguably the best
pop and rock music in the world.

In that sense to teach Phonetics and Phonology will help to learn to read and
spell appropriately the language target .

By learning Phonics one can understand any English conversation ,songs ,films,
etc and through a lot of practise to sound like a native speaker of the
language.

the correct pronunciation defines the sense of what one talks about. For
example: world, word and work are so similar in their pronunciation In this
case is so important to emphasize the correct pronunciation, so it is not
posible to be confused about the sense of the sentence.

As teachers to have a correct pronunciation it is needed, because

pronunciation affects very much on the understanding of the meanings of the
words. If the sound of word differs a lot this would convey to confusion. To
avoid such kind of problems it is necessary to get a correct pronunciation this
does not mean to sound like native speakers, but at least to be understood by
a variety of listeners and this goal can not be achieved if students are not
provided the teaching.

For many English language learners, pronunciation and the spoken language
are hardest to learn because it requires a lot of training of the tongue and
mouth to form the correct sounds. For foreign students it is difficult to adapt
their tongue and mouth to create the sounds of the target language, making it
even more difficult to master English pronunciation yet. However, with a lot
of practice, and patience, this goal can be achieved.

Although Phonics is the most neglected aspect of English language teaching.

Most english teachers lack training and confidence to tackle this area. Applied
phonetics is rarely taught at schools or even universities. Then there is fact
that the native english speakers find it difficult to hear certain features, such
as the fall or rise of the speech, particularly at the end of the sentences. An
effective teacher considers the teaching of pronunciation an integral part of
the course.

Pronunciation is not an optional extra for the language learner, any more than
grammar, vocabulary or any other aspect of language is. If a learner’s general
aim is to talk intelligibly to others in another language, a reasonable
pronunciation is essentialy important to get the goal.
