Veterans, active military get free admission to state parks in August
Colorado Parks and Wildlife is offering all active-duty military and veterans free entrance to all 41 Colorado state parks during August. Free access for veterans and active-duty military in August is a program CPW offers in appreciation to those who serve and have served our country. All eligible military members may pick up their hangtag and pass beginning Aug. 1. Proof of service must be presented at any Parks and Wildlife office or state park. All military personnel honorably discharged, discharged under honorable conditions, or with general discharge, as well as active duty, reservist and National Guard personnel are eligible to obtain a military hang-tag pass valid for free admission. Though park entrance fees are waived, activities such as fishing and camping still require a valid license or reservation.
Lunafest film festival benefits local SPEAK event
Bud Werner Memorial Library and Young Bloods Collective present Steamboat Springs' 10th annual Lunafest, a nationally touring film festival of award-winning short films made by women, at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 8 in Library Hall. This nationally touring film festival highlights women as leaders in society, illustrated through eight short films by women filmmakers. Lunafest films range from animation to fictional drama, and cover topics such as women’s health, body image, relationships, cultural diversity and breaking barriers. These stories of reflection, hope and humor will compel discussion, make you laugh, tug at your heartstrings and motivate you to make a difference in your community. A $10 donation at the door helps support the festival's continued screening in Steamboat and the production of Young Blood Collective's annual SPEAK performance in March. Visit www.steamboatlibrary.org/events for more information, including a link to pre-purchase tickets online.

Howelsen Hill trail closures expected during transmission line construction
Yampa Valley Electric Association will take advantage of a limited window to switch the transmission line that runs from the Brooklyn Substation to the top of Howelsen Hill over the first-half of August. Over the week of Aug. 5 through Aug. 9, crews and equipment will mobilize around the Brooklyn Substation and focus on hanging wire rollers and the bull rope. Trucks will be accessing every structure during this phase. Once the bull rope is in place, the conductor will be pulled and terminated at the top of Howelsen and at the Brooklyn Substation. During the week of Aug. 12 through Aug. 18, work will finish in the Brooklyn to Howelsen corridor if required and then commence from the top of Howelsen Hill to the west. Heavy equipment and large trucks will be using Blackmer Trail to reach the site and trail users should expect to encounter rolling closure and traffic control personnel. Closures will occur in the staging areas around the top of Howelsen and middle of NPR, along with temporary closures of Blackmer, T-Bar and Orton Trails.
