IMPERIALSEALS DANMPGUARD Made from prime virgin base Polymers to 300 microns thick Perfect membrane for providing damp profing security and dry concrete floors Will last the lifetime of the structure Damp proofing of ground floor slabs is portions the most overlooked area of the building fabric. Architects and Engineers who would speci g systems for basement walls and floors: DAMPGUARD SUPER 300 DPM Is the best membrane available in the market place today. Manufactured from prime virgin base polyethylene Polymers, it is calibrated to 300 microns in thickness. It is the perfect membrane for providirig damp proofing security to concrete ground floor slabs nd will last the lifetime of the structure DAMPGUARD SUPER 300 DPM is manufactured to prevailing standards to meet its demanding lifelong application in preventing ground moisture or vapour from penetrating concrete ground floor slabs. DAMPGUARD SUPER 300 DPM i cent blue to allow for easy recognition of usage inspectors at site. is supplied i CAUSES OF RISING DAMP ar sq ft, it (4) inch slab will allow 12 gallons of water through every24 hours per 1000 sq ft of concrete slab. TREATMENT FOR RISING DAMP Ther 10 known counter treatment or anti- dote which could cure rising damp when it occurs on concrete ground floor slabs. The ideal solution is to demolish the affected concrete slab, install a Dpm and recast the concrete slab in total. ‘An alternative is to install a Dpm onto the existing slab and cast another layer of concrete slab over the Dpm. Restorative treatment could have been avoided Dampguard have been carefully installed the first time round. Dampguard 300 super Dpm is not cost prohibitive. At just a few cent per square ft it is well worth its weight in salt. It remains buried and will con- finues to work throughout the life of the building structure. ‘Most Developer, Architects and Engineers will not compromise over a few cents per square foot. However, they can be misled by unscrupulous supp! ers into accepting sub standard products monufac- tured from recycled polymers. One cannot see, smell or taste Radon, but it is a problem in residential homes. Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States. The US Environmental Agency (EPA) and the Surgeon General Office have estimated that as many as 20,000 lung cancer deaths are caused by Radon each year. Radon induce lung cancer cost the United States over 2 billion dollars per year in both direct and indirect health care costs. PARTICULAR SPECIFICATION (DPC) DAMP PROOF COUSES DAMP PROOF COURSE (DPC) FOR BRICKWORKS Al brick works will receive a layer of Damp proof course manufactured purposefully to prevent or resist water vapour from moving up brick or brick plaster walls. No products such as roofing felt, China Felt or bitumen will be accepted for use. Damp Proof Courses conforming to the British Standard 6398 and BS 6515 will be the only products acceptable for use in this project, BS 6398 TYPE B ~a fibre based saturated sheeting coated with a grade of special bitumen. BS 6398 TYPE D — a hessian based bituminous DPC with a membrane of sheet lead coated with bitumen, BS 6398 TYPE E —a fibre based bituminous DPC with a membrane of sheet lead coated completely with bitumen, BS 6515: 1984 —an extruded Polymer film of $00 microns in thickness and widths to fit various sizes of bricks that comes in 30 m rolls, Brickgrip which is manufactured to BS 6515:1984 is lighter and cleaner to the touch and its surface is embossed with diamond shapes to prevent slips from occurring. This relatively new product is inexpensive and is a qualified product for use in brick walls. China made Felts with Bitumen are not designed for DPC ‘works. They are low grade roofing felts designated for use ‘over workers site quarters or any temporary shelters. ‘SURFACE PREPARATION Prior tothe laying of Strip Damp Proofing Courses, all surfaces must be levelled smooth and free from sand or stones to receive the approved Damp Proof Course membrane. PARTICULAR SPECIFICATION: APPROVAL OF PRODUCTS AND METHOLOGY OF APPLICATION ‘The contractor will be responsible for providing Technical Literature and Samples to the Supervising Architect or Engineer for consideration, ‘The supervising Authority will not entertain any product which does not have a Technical Literature with Specifications to support its worth ‘The Specification for tender may fall short of the correct usage of words to describe Damp Proofing Membranes or Damp Proof Courses. This must not be used against the consultants for not having specified the product for use in proper. lt must be remembered that all Tendering Contractors are deemed to have the basic Technical Knowledge and Capacity to understand what a genuine Damp Proofing Membrane or a Damp Proof Course is made out of and not attempt to submit non engineered films for use in this project. METHOLOGY OF APPLICATION Contractors will provide a method statement of application which will include a demonstration prior to the commencement of the application works. ‘Where such applications are done without prior notification, and supervision, the said works will be recalled with the demolishment of the unsupervised or non-registered works. All pleads for leniency will not be entertained as Rising, Damp is a Serious Defect. Where instructions to demolish concrete structures are not heeded within a week, the Supervising Officer have the right to instruct a third party to execute the demolishment works and have the cost back charged to the Main Contractor. Whilst the mentioned products are but examples to cater for basic standards, Alternative products from different ‘manufacturers are allowed for submission as long as said Technical Literature with specification are submitted Jointly with the samples. Test Certificates must be provided. THE PREVENTION OF RISING DAMP _ -PARTICULAR SPECIFICATION DAMP PROOFING MEMBRANES (DPM’S) AND DAMP PROOF COURSES (DPC’S) Damp Proofing Membranes will be laid under all ground floor reinforced concrete slabs within the boundary of the project in question. PREPARATION Irrespective of the siting of concrete slabs, be it suspended or not, damp proofing membranes shall be laid onto well prepared ground substrates. The soil shall be levelled and tamped down with a vibrating tamper till a well compacted flat surface is achieved. Where hard core is used, tamping ‘works will have to be executed to ensure that all hard-core protrusions are made level PROTECTION In addition, it will be absolutely important to installa bed of granite quarry dust over the hard core prior to the laying of Damp Proofing Membranes. Granite quarry dust or sand blinding should be laid to approximately 50 mm in thickness, tamped, compacted and levelled with a vibrating, plate compactor in accordance to the code of practice. INSTALLATION Rolls of DPM are generally rolled out onto the prepared substrate with allowances for vertical termination flaps for termination to walls of beams or any vertical surfaces. Where the width of the roll is insufficient to cover an arca, the overlapping of sheets is allowed on condition that all ‘overlaps in-between sheots have an overlapping cover of 150 mm and held down with two lines of technical tapes known as [RONGRIP. No overlapping without taping is allowed no matter how wide the overlap is. Vapour will seep through overlapped. sheets if no sealing tapes are used to prevent the flow of vapour. Perimeter terminations against ground beams must be allowed up to 75 mm or 100 mm up the walls of ground beams. Cheap double sided tapes from stationary stores should never be used as an alternative as such tapes are only sold in stationary stores for light fixation of paper and are not designed to last the test oftime, Walls of ground beams affected by perimeter termination of DPM must be washed down clean of all laitance or mud and dried prior to priming and the installation of IRONGRIP TAPES. The surface of ground beam must be conditioned with a coating of Sealflex primer. Sealflex primer must be allowed to dry before IRONGRIP is installed along the perimeter of the ground beam. It will be understood that two layers of IRONGRIP is needed to secure the Damp Proofing Membrane. PARTICULAR SPECIFICATION: FINAL PROTECTION Ie will be necessary to install a SOmm thick screed of cement and sand or grade 15 concrete as a protection course over the laid Damp Proofing Membrane. This will ensure that damage or rupture to the membrane will not occur. Foot trafficking and reinforcement installation is the general cause of damages to membranes. All Damp Proofing Membranes or films will conform to the below said requirements ‘© DPM films must be manufactured from 100% Virgin LDPE polymers through the blown process. © No Recycled polymers must be used for the manufacture of such films. As such, all opaque, black, creamy or Grey coloured films are disallowed for use under concrete ground floor slabs. + The finished film shall be smooth to the touch and shall be translucent. © The thickness of DPM films shall not be less than 300 microns in thickness after taking the variable ‘of 10% into account. ‘©The film must be UV stabilised Tensile Suength 17 MPa ‘Tear Strength (Transverse) 49 Newtons/imm Impact Strength 800 Elongation at Break 800% Burst Strength 27 Newtons/mm Melting Point 112°C Puncture Resistance: Min 2200 ‘Water Vapour Permeance 0.03 perms Chemical Resistant Resistant SUGGESTED MATERIALS 1, Dampguard 300 Super DPM (300 Microns) 2. Raven Vapor block VB15 (381 Microns) 3. Raven Vapor block Plus (508 Microns) 4, Visqueen High Performance DPM (500 Microns) SELECTION OF DPM FILMS {In general, due consideration must be given to the soil condition as well as the building structure type to determine the thickness of films to be used. ‘Thicker films are considered for use in cases where there is the apparent probability of damage to the films during installation of after. Thicker films can serves as containment barriers when there is the possibility of contamination of the ground from liquids or chemicals which may leach through concrete slabs into the ground below. Known gases such as Methane and Redon are also found harbouring in the ground, ‘Thicker films of minimum 500 microns are used to combat the migration of RADON GASES into homes or facilities as Radon is a silent killer it causes Cancer, THE PREVENTION OF RISING DAMP
