SCIENCE 10 1st Quarter

Week 1
Name:____________________________ Grade &Section:________________Date:_______
Topic: Volcano and its Relation to Plate Tectonics
Learning Competencies & Code: The learners should be able to describe the distribution of
active volcanoes, earthquake epicenters, and major mountain belts. S10ES –Ia-j-36.1
Subtasks:
1. Explain how volcanoes are formed based on the movement of plate
boundaries.
2. Locate some of the active volcanoes on the Philippine map.
Content:
PLATE TECTONICS
Plate tectonics is the theory that Earth's outer shell
is divided into several plates that glide over the
mantle.
The outer shell is called crust which has two
forms:
1. Continental crust: crust that forms the
continent. Thicker but less dense because it
is composed mainly of granite.
2. Oceanic crust:crust under the ocean. Thinner but more denser because it is composed
mainly of basalt.

Activity 1: List the Plates!

Using the figure below, classify
the plates on the right side
whether it is major continental
plate, minor continental plate, or
an oceanic plate.

VOLCANO
A volcano is an opening on the surface of a
planet or moon that allows material warmer
than its surroundings to escape from its
interior. When this material escapes, it
causes an eruption.
Volcanoes are most likely to occur along the
margins of tectonic plates, especially in
subduction zones where oceanic plates dive https://tinyurl.com/y3mcr6pw
under continental plates.
As the oceanic plate subducts beneath the surface, intense heat and pressure melts the rock.
A subducting plate creates volcanoes.

Activity 2: Plot Me!

Using the table of active
volcanoes in the Philippines, plot
those active volcanoes in the
Philippine map in their respected
area and answer the guide
questioons that follows.
Q1. Where do you find most of
the active volcanoes?

2. What do you think is the

reason why Philippines has a lot
of active volcanoes?

Q3. Eurasian plate and Philippine plate will
converge/collide each other as they keep on
moving based on plate tectonic theory.
What will then happen to the Philippine and
Eurasian plate? Will there be any formation
of volcanoes? Prove your answer.
