Question:

Prove that if f : [a, b]  R is integrable function, then f is also integrable on [a, b] .

2

Solution;

Let f is integrable on [a,b] then there exist a particle P of [a,b] and € >0 such
that

[U(p,f) –L(p,f) ]< 2 M (say)

Where |f ( x)|≤ M for all x ⋲[a,b]

( if f is integrable on [a,b] so it must be bounded)

Now|f 2 (x)−f 2 ( y )|=|f ( x )−f ( y)||f ( x )+ f ( y )|

≤ 2M|f ( x ) −f ( y )|

2 { f 2 ( x ) ; xi−1 ≤ x≤ x i }
M i (f ¿ ¿2)−mi ( f ) = −⁡Inf { f 2 ( x ) ; x i−1 ≤ x ≤ x i } ¿

≤ 2M¿
n

∑ M i ( f ¿¿ 2)−mi ( f )2 ¿ ≤ 2M¿
i=1

U(p,f2)-L(p,f2) ≤ 2M(U(p,f)-L(p,f)

U(p,f2)-L(p,f2) ≤ 2M 2 M

U(p,f2)-L(p,f2) ≤ ⋲

Hence f2 is also integrable on [a,b]
