 THE MOST IMPORTANT
LUBRICANT SPECIFICATIONS
Specifications are important as they indicate what the performance level of the oil is. The two main
ones come from API (American Petroleum Institute) and ACEA (Association des Constructeurs
Européens d’Automobiles), and any quality oil should contain at least one of these specifications.

API
The American Petroleum Institute (API) is the only national trade association that represents all
aspects of America’s oil and natural gas industry. Amongst all the activities of API, one of them is to
define lubricant specifications. There are two main categories: “S” for petrol (S stands for “service/
spark ignition”) and “C” for Diesel (C stands for “commercial/compression ignition”). Traditionally,
on the American market, petrol engines are mainly for passenger cars where diesel engines are
for heavy duty applications, but most oils carry both petrol and diesel specifications. The current
specifications for passenger cars according to the API are API SN, SM, SL and SJ. The higher
the letter after the S or C, the more recent the technology of the oil. For recent oil, the higher
specification will supersede the lower letter grade. For example, if we have an oil with specification
SN, it can also be used for vehicles which require API SM, SL and SJ; it is backwards compatible.
The current specifications according to API are SN/CF, SM/CF and SL/CF for passenger car and
CK-4, CJ-4, CI-4 and CH-4 for commercial vehicles.
Since December 2016, there is a new category for commercial vehicles, the category F, focusing
on Fuel Economy. It is not backwards compatible with the C category and it concerns, so far, a few
new truck models.

DIESEL API LEVELS

In the diesel engine oil service category chart, you are able to find the most
common diesel engine oil specifications. The chart indicates up to what year the
specification can be used.

ACEA
Association des Constructeurs Européens d’Automobiles (ACEA), also known as the European
Automobile Manufacturers’ Association. ACEA is the European equivalent of API (US) and is more
specific in what the performance of the oil actually is. For Heavy Duty vehicles there is the “E”
specification which is suitable for Heavy Duty applications including buses and transport vehicles. For
the light duty vehicles there are the “A” and “B” specifications. For an exact explanation about ACEA
wspecifications, please see the table above.
