First Speaker (Christian):

Good afternoon Sir michael, Ladies and Gentlemen My team and I are disagreeing and arguing against the
topic that Schools must not give assignments. We first and foremost are going to be disagreeing to the argument
given to us by the first affirmative speaker (responding to the definition) Before I present the arguments, we
proposed a definition to the topic that “Schools must not give assignments.” And so we defined the topic as students
not doing their homework, can be considered being lazy.
This definition gives us an idea that students not doing their homework can be another factor for being lazy;
one example is not doing chores.
(my idea if they have said something that I want to rebuttal) So Moving on to my arguments, you have
stated……
Homework…...hmm not very pleasing to hear right? A lot students hate homework .Well Homework DOES
encourage students to take initiative and responsibility for completing a task. From what I can say is that AT LEAST
homework tries to inform students that “I am also an important part in school”. (if they say that students should
stop doing homeworks and spend more time with their family) Going back to the definition, from what I said earlier,
For the definition of “can be considered as lazy,” we knew that it also meant something else, that is, students don't
want to do their homework to be with their family, most of the students at least wants to be with their family, we
also know that this is what students want to do when they have their own free time, we argue that somewhat doing
homework doesn’t hurt at all, spending your day doing homework is vastly surprising.
Whilst our team does not doubt that spending your time on homework won't be a waste. The time you
spend on doing homework will develop more than academic skills alone. Homework sessions encourage you to use
your time wisely, work independently and engage better with the subject matter. It will also improve your memory
and critical thinking. The most comprehensive research on homework to date comes from a 2006 meta-analysis by
Duke University psychology professor Harris Cooper, who found evidence of a positive correlation between
homework and student achievement, meaning students who did homework performed better in school gain a good
sense of personal responsibility. Another statement that you have informed us (if they say homework is stressful) In
fact I would like to cite that Nearly 56 percent of the students considered homework a primary source of stress, As
my group researched we knew that students do not organize their time and consume it wiseley.. Finally Only 17
percent of the students thought homework is useful in learning, developing critical thinking skills, and helping them
memorize information. This is somehow a good start and a journey for students, the other 27% has not thought
about homework with anything at all.
If you say that homework is stressful, there is something called time management, at least you better
manage your time. It improves the coordination of tasks and activities to maximize the effectiveness of an
individual's efforts. Essentially, the purpose of time management is enabling people to get more and better work
done in less time. Students, it’s not the amount of homework that you do that determines your grades, but a deeper
understanding of materials that you gain because of that. Forcing students to spend more time on assignments
won’t bring the desired effect. They should learn to be willing to spend more time on their homework and be more
likely to get a deeper understanding of academic subjects.
(team line) I, as the first speaker of the negative team, will be talking about Schools giving homework is NOT
to blame, individuals who we call students should adapt in a way they can handle their own responsibility, organizing
their time to consume it wisely, open minded in such students to be more precise, calm, and to concentrate in that
kind of position they are in. As I gave my arguments earlier, I will be arguing 2 points. To start with is how homework
has helped students to practice their individual skills. And secondly, how schools tried to give surprising and
interesting homeworks for students to do instead. Starting with the first point, Homeworks are also considered as a
responsibility. Doing your homework teaches you how to study and work independently because you learn how to
use different resources, like libraries, texts, book chapters, and even websites. Teaches you effective time
management and how to prioritize all of your tasks;Helps you learn how to get rid of procrastination because of
assigned deadlines;Helps you improve your self-esteem and identify existing issues before they get out of your
control;Reinforces concepts because the more you practice, the more likely you are to learn them. Lastly Is the
second point, schools, with the help of teachers give assignments that are fun for the students to do, rather than just
multiple choices and a summary of a story they just /rɛd/, how about singing and making your own lyrics, dancing it
out, performing a poem you just made, and many other more that is very interesting for students to do. Homework
gives parents a chance to see what their child has been learning and having a new set of skills in school.
So sir michael, ladies and gentleman, In conclusion homeworks are very essential to a student, even if
students think homework is stressful, wasting your own free time. Schools must still give homeworks to us students.
Homeworks is one of the tasks and responsibilities of a student.

Second Speaker (Ronald):

Good afternoon Mr. JM, ladies and gentlemen! My name is Ronald Paul Ramos, the second speaker of the
negative team. The motion of the debate is that “Schools must not give assignments.” We on the negative side
believe that statement is false.

The second speaker tried to tell you that ( insert what they said ). This is wrong because ( state reason
through research ). ( if they have another flaw to their research) So he/she also said that ( insert what they said ).
This is wrong because ( state reason through research ).

Our first speaker has already stated that students who don’t do their homeworks are considered lazy and
not productive. He also stated that homeworks encourage students to take initiative and responsibility for
completing a task. Today I will be talking about 3 points.

To my first point, homework improves student achievement. According to our research, studies show that
homework improves student achievement in terms of improved grades, test results, and the likelihood to attend
college. Research published in the High School Journal indicates that students who spent between 31 and 90 minutes
each day on homework “scored about 40 points higher on the SAT-Mathematics subtest than their peers, who
reported spending no time on homework each day, on average.”  Another research conducted by the Institute for the
Study of Labor (IZA) concluded that increased homework led to better GPAs and higher probability of college
attendance for high school students. In fact, students who attended college did more than three hours of additional
homework per week in high school.

To my second point, homework helps reinforce learning and develop good study habits and life skills.
Everyone knows that practice makes perfect. Students typically retain only 50% of the information teachers provide
in class, and they need to apply that information in order to truly learn it. Homework helps students to develop key
skills that they’ll use throughout their lives, such as accountability, autonomy, discipline, time management, self-
direction, critical thinking, and independent problem-solving. A research was conducted by the City University of
New York noted that “students who engage in self-regulatory processes while completing homework,” such as goal-
setting, time management, and remaining focused,” are generally more motivated and are higher achievers than
those who do not use these processes.”

To my third and last point, homework allows parents to be involved with their child’s learning at schools as
well as their academic strengths and weaknesses. Data from nationwide sample of elementary school students show
that parental involvement in homework can improve class performance. A research was conducted by Johns Hopkins
University found that an interactive homework process known as TIPS ( Teachers Involve Parents in Schoolwork )
improves student achievement: “Students in the TIPS group learned significantly higher report card grades after 18
weeks (1 TIPS assignment per week) than did non-TIPS students.”

Homework can also help clue parents in to the existence of any learning disabilities their children may have,
allowing them to get help and adjust learning strategies as needed. Duke University professor Harris Cooper, PhD,
noted, “Two parents once told me they refused to believe their child had a learning disability until homework
revealed it to them.”

So Mr. MJ, ladies and gentlemen, in conclusion homeworks are one of the important factors on our daily
lives and we can’t live without it. Without homeworks, we won’t be able to progress this far and become the people
we are today. Homeworks are important and it should be acknowledged. Jim Rohn, an entrepreneur, once said,
“Nothing is more powerful for your future than being a gatherer of good ideas and information. That’s called doing
your homework.”

Third Speaker (Ameer):

Good afternoon Mr./Madam Chairman, Ladies and Gentlemen (Use Madam or Mr. depending upon the gender of the
Chairman.) The topic for our debate is “That Schools must not give assignments " We the negative team believe that this statement
is false.

REBUTTAL We the negative team believe that this statement is false because we do not agree on the statement that school
must not give assignments because first of all it’s the only way a teacher would know what you don’t understand in the lesson and
what needs to be done in order for you to understand it because most of the kids these days are scared to ask questions because
they think that they would be made fun of because they don’t get the lesson so in this way without you asking the teacher he/she
would know your weakness in the part of the lesson.

The first affirmative speaker has tried to tell you (During the debate write what your opposition’s third speaker has said on
a rebuttal card.) This is wrong because (During the debate write a reason why what your opposition’s first speaker has said is
wrong.) The second affirmative speaker has tried to tell you (During the debate write on a rebuttal card what your opposition’s
second speaker has said.) This is wrong because (During the debate write a reason why what your opposition’s second speaker has
said is wrong.) The third affirmative speaker has tried to tell you (During the debate write on a rebuttal card what your opposition’s
third speaker has said if that is important.) This is wrong because (During the debate write a reason why what your opposition’s
third speaker has said is wrong.) Try to rebut as many of the opposition’s points as you can.

SUMMARY As third speaker it is your job to summarize your team’s case. You do this by listing the points of your first and
second speakers. Our first speaker spoke to you about (List your first speaker’s first point. Include a reason to support this
argument.) S/he also said that (List your first speaker’s second point. Include a reason to support this argument.) Our second
speaker spoke to you about (List your second speaker’s first point. Include a reason to support this argument.) S/he also stated that
(List your second speaker’s second point. Include a reason to support this argument.) 12. Make sure that you have included all the
arguments for your side.

ENDING So Mr./Madam Chairman, Ladies and Gentlemen, in conclusion we, (As the final speaker for the negative, finish
your debate with a really compelling, influential and powerful statement. If you can’t think of anything to say you may say ‘thank
you’ to finish) So, Mr./Madam Chairman, Ladies and Gentlemen, in conclusion we, (As the final speaker for the negative, disagree on
this statement because There is a link between homework and academic achievement. The time you spend on doing homework will
develop more than academic skills alone. Homework sessions encourage you to use your time wisely, work independently and
engage better with the subject matter. It will also improve your memory and critical thinking. Homework creates a bridge between
school and home Homework can help you become a better student in several different ways. First of all, homework given in
advance of a particular subject can help you make the most of your classroom discussion time. Homework also gives you valuable
practice with what you've learned in the classroom. Often, the brief period of time you have during class to learn something new is
simply not enough. Repeating classroom concepts at home helps to cement in your mind the things you learned.

Homework teaches lessons beyond just what's taught in the classroom, too. Bringing homework home, completing it
correctly, and turning it in promptly teaches a host of other important life skills, from time management and responsibility to
organization and prioritization, and I thank you.
