Recently, a song came out called, “Driver’s License”, by 17 year old actress Olivia Rodrigo. It has
created a controversy between three major Disney actors Olivia Rodrigo, Joshua Bassett, and Sabrina
Carpenter, that has the world shook.
The young actress in late 2019 starred in the first season of the Disney hit show High School Musical:
The Musical: The Series along with her 20 year old co-star, Joshua Bassett. While filming the show it was
rumored that the two actors supposedly had on screen romance along with off screen. Sadly, at the time
Olivia was dating her previous co-star, Ethan Wacker, from Disney hit show Bizaardvark.
After the show had ended it’s first season Olivia broke up with her boyfriend Ethan and was seen
around publicly with Joshua. Everything seemed to be going great with their relationship until the
Coronavirus hit, causing them to quarantine apart from each other. It seemed as if Joshua had broken up
with Olivia.
Months went by without hearing anything about their relationship until a TikTok was posted with both
Joshua Bassett and Sabrina Carpenter, 21 year old Disney actor from the hit show Girl Meets World. It
was Halloween and the two were wearing matching costumes, SharkBoy and Lava Girl. After this online
appearance the two were seen together publicly multiple times after. It seemed as if Joshua and Sabrina
were dating, and everything was fine. It seemed as if Olivia and Joshua were officially over, but there
wasn’t too much drama when the relationship ended.
On January 8, 2021 Olivia came out with her first single “Driver's License”. The song was originally
posted on Youtube, but after a short clip of the song blew up on TikTok fans began to have speculations.
Olivia’s song is definitely directed towards a certain person since it says lines such as, “I got my
driver's license last week, just like we always talked about” and “And I know we weren't perfect but I've
never felt this way for no one”. Funny thing is, Joshua previously talked about how he taught Olivia how
to drive.
Olivia also has a line in her song that says, “Guess you didn't mean what you wrote in that song about
me”. Joshua came out with a song last year called, “Anyone Else”, that he claimed was about how he
wanted to be with Olivia, but she was still with Ethan at the time.
On top of all that Olivia has lines in her song that say, “And you're probably with that blonde girl, who
always made me doubt, she's so much older than me, she's everything I'm insecure about”. Joshua is
currently dating Sabrina who is not only blonde, but also four years older than Olivia.
For all of these reasons fans began to suspect that everything with Olivia and Joshua was not just
‘okay’. Although, it was never officially stated the song was aimed towards Joshua. So, fans blew up
Olivia’s song trying to figure out the story behind it.
Suddenly on the day “Driver’s License” came out Joshua posted on Instagram saying his new song
“Lie, Lie, Lie” would be coming out shortly. Fans first believed that Joshua was just trying to steal some
attention away from Olivia, but after his video came out fans started to think that this situation has to be
one big PR stunt.
Too many things in each of the videos are just too similar. Both Olivia and Joshuas’ songs featured an
old fashioned car and similar lighting, purple, blue, and red. Also, in a scene in Olivia’s bedroom there
appeared a brunette curly haired boy on Olivia’s bed, Joshua’s hair is both. In Joshua’s video he first
appears with a blonde in the car and then wakes up from his dream in a bed next to a straight haired
brunette girl, who appears to be Olivia.
Joshua also has lines in his song such as, “So they told me all the things that you said, running all over
my name, oh, and you're acting oh so innocent, like I'm the only one to blame, you've been lying to
yourself, lie to everyone else” and “I know you're lying through your teeth, you told them the lies that you
told me”, referring to Olivia, perhaps.
But, Joshua previously stated that he wrote this song almost two years ago. Which would not make
sense for it to be a PR stunt seeing that Olivia wrote the song recently.
On top of all this Sabrina recently came out with her version of the story, her new song “Skin”,
finishing off the love triangle songs. Her song states lines such as, “Maybe you didn’t mean it, maybe
“blonde” was the only rhyme, the only rhyme.” It is speculated by fans that this line refers specifically to
Olivia.
She also says in her song, “You can try to get under my, under my, under my skin, while hе's on mine,
yeah, all on my, all on my, all on my skin”. Fans believe that Sabrina must be referring to her relationship
with Joshua and Olivia’s past relationship with him. Sabrina also says, “Don’t drive yourself insane”.
Fans believed she used the word ‘drive’ to indicate Olivia's song “Driver’s License”.
Although there has not been too many responses to each other’s songs, Olivia did respond to Sabrina’s
new song on Twitter saying, “I didn’t even rhyme blonde with anything.” This as a matter of fact is a true
statement.
Olivia’s song, “Driver’s License”, as of January 28, 2021, has broken so many records with over 111
million views on Youtube, being number one on The Billboard Hot 100 Chart, having over 100 million
streams on Spotify, having gotten onto Amazon Prime Music, and having been used on TikTok almost 1.8
million times. She has officially been named the number one most consistent female singer on the charts
ever.
Fans are continuing to still speculate whether or not this love triangle of songs between Olivia
Rodrigo, Joshua Bassett, and Sabrina Carpenter is a PR stunt or not, but nevertheless, the fact still
remains that off of just this situation these three actors are making millions, in views, opinions, and cash.
