when a typical day meant bike riding, playing in the neighborhood, and even running to the store to pick something up for Mom. But today, many parents fear- and many parents of color have experienced- having themselves, and more importantly their children, subjected to the trauma of a child neglect investigation. This makes them hesitant to give their children, whom they believe to be sufficiently capable and mature, permission to safely play.
WHAT DOES SB143 SEEK TO DO?
Amend NRS criminal and civil child neglect statutes to declare that neglect does NOT occur when parents allow their kids to engage in independent activities Reduce the vagueness in the child neglect statute that allows findings based on situations that 'may' cause harm
WHAT CHANGES ARE ANTICIPATED?
Parents' judgements about their children's abilities receive more respect Less fear of letting children play outside and with other kids — more play, more independence, more resilience in our kids! Very important child protectors in law enforcement and children's protective services can focus more resources on acute cases of child protection
