1. Design a round spiral column (determine dimensions, number
steel reinforcements, and pitch or spacing of spirals) to support an
axial dead load of 1200 kN and an axial live load of 1850 kN. Assume
that 2% longitudinal steel is desired, f’c = 27.6 MPa, and fy = 414 MPa.
Use 25 mm main reinforcement and 10 mm spiral with 30 mm clear
covering to ties.
NOTE: See Module 3.1 Pure Axial for code limitations on the spiral pitch
2. Design (determine dimensions, number steel reinforcements,
and pitch or spacing of spirals) a spiral column to carry a factored load
of 1900 kN and a factored moment of 24 kN-m such that it can be
analyzed as pure axial. Assume f’c = 27.6 MPa and fy =415 MPa.
Initially, 2.5% steel ratio is desired. Use 16 mm main reinforcement and
10 mm spiral with 30 mm clear covering to ties.
*NOTE: Diameter of column=h
3. (Past Board Exam Problem)
The section of a column is shown below. For this problem, b1=300mm,
b2=180mm, d1=250mm, d2=350mm. f'c=28 MPa, fy=414 MPa

a) Determine the location of the plastic centroid measured from the y

axis. Neglect area of concrete occupied by the steel
b) Determine the location of the plastic centroid measured from the y
axis. Consider the area of concrete occupied by the steel.
c) Determine the Nominal Axial and Moment Capacities at Balanced
Failure for moment about the Y-axis. Determine also the eccentricity at
this condition. (Use Plastic Centroid from question B)
4. Using the same section and properties for number 3, determine the
nominal axial and moment capacity of the column if the axial load is
applied at an eccentricity of 500mm.
5. Using the same section and properties for number 3, determine the
nominal axial and moment capacity of the column if the axial load is
applied at an eccentricity of 200mm
6. A rectangular beam has the following dimensions:
bw=350mm; d=600mm
Assume:
f'c=20.7 MPa; fy=414 MPa.
Determine the required spacing using 10mm diameter bars for the
following Vu's"
1. Vu=60 kN
2. Vu=380 kN
3. Vu=710 kN
a. NO STIRRUP NEEDED
b. USE S=110 mm
c. THE BEAM SIZE IS NOT ADEQUATE; REVISE SECTION
