General rule: add -ing

Infinite Verb Gerund

Verbs ending in -e

When a verb ends in –e, drop the –e and add -ing

Verbs ending in -ie

When a verb ends in –ie, drop the –ie and add -ying

One-syllable verbs ending in consonant + vowel +
consonant (CVC)
When a one-syllable verb ends in CVC , double the final consonant and add -ing

* To eat (a one-syllable verb ending in consonant) is not a CVC, so we just add –ing: eating

Do not double the consonant with verbs ending in w, x or y

Verbs ending in CVC with the stress on the final syllable

When a verb ends in CVC with stress on the final syllable, double the consonant and add -ing
