Renewables impact on the grid
Grid Firming and the rise of renewables
• Grid Firming is the addition of an energy resource to a power plant or system to balance the
intermittent variation of another
• Adding renewable resources leads to :

1. A need for flexible technologies with fast ramps and spinning

reserve to firm the capacity and balance the demand and counteract
the variability of wind and solar

2. Lack of rotational/synchronous inertia back to grid leading to

frequency deviations
3. Weakening grids with a low Short Circuit Ratio due to inverters and
power electronics

Power Supply and Demand Balance (50Hz)

4. A need for ancilliary services that include Frequency and Voltage
Power Hz Loads Losses
Regulation to support Grid stability

6. A need for the integration with existing generation mix

7. An efficient Turndown requirement with minimal emissions impact

Battery storage
WORLD’S FIRST
battery
The oldest electricity storage device is
believed to date from approximately 200
BC. It was discovered near Baghdad, Iraq,
and is located at the Iraq National
Museum. Experiments have shown that
this clay pot, fitted with a copper electrode
and filled with vinegar or a similar acid,
could generate between 1.5 and 2 volts.
The purpose of this battery remains a
mystery.
In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, vs.
electrical pioneer Alessandro Conte di BATTERY ENERGY STORAGE systems are typically configured

For a fixed level in the bathtub, several drain lines can be

Battery discharge capability resulting in a slower discharge (an energy configuration). In
each case, the system has the same amount of water (stored

• Auto start / stop of BESS and GT
• Split power delivery between BESS and GT
• Split frequency droop response
• BESS state of charge management
• Fault handling

GE PROPRIETARY - UNCONTROLLED WHEN PRINTED OR ELECTRONICALLY TRANSMITTED

Hybrid Controls – BESS Auto Start/Stop
HCS ensures the BESS is online to provide power in hybrid
operation by commanding BESS start/stop

BESS start:
• When HYBRID mode is ENABLED, the BESS is issued a start command and all
available inverters are brought online and ramped to meet the net power
setpoint

BESS stop:
• When HYBRID mode is DISABLED (operator disabled or automatically
disabled due to fault conditions), the BESS is issued a stop command,
causing it to ramp all inverters to 0 MW and then go offline

GE PROPRIETARY - UNCONTROLLED WHEN PRINTED OR ELECTRONICALLY TRANSMITTED

EGT LM6– How does it work ?
• The HCS will automatically start the gas turbine based on the
net power demand and based on frequency droop events. 3
sets of conditions which are independently evaluated and will
cause the HCS to automatically start the gas turbine are given
below:

• When the net power demand is greater than 0.25 MW for 3

seconds. This ensures that the gas turbine is started as early as
possible to facilitate a spinning reserve dispatch or
normal start.

• If the frequency falls so low that the corresponding frequency

droop power required exceeds 7 MW for a continuous 30
seconds period. This corresponds to a frequency drop to <=
59.663 Hz for >= 30 seconds. This indicates that the grid is
suffering from a large frequency event and will likely require a
large secondary frequency response.

• If the state of charge of the BESS falls so low (<25%) that it

would risk a successful spinning reserve dispatch, and if a
frequency event is occurring that requires a primary frequency
response.

GE PROPRIETARY - UNCONTROLLED WHEN PRINTED OR ELECTRONICALLY TRANSMITTED

Hybridization optimizes on the minimum amount of internal energy storage
Hybridization Overview required to overcome specific physical constraints of a conventional generator
• Energy store is dedicated to enhancing the performance of the conventional
generator
• Improving/eliminating start time
• Improving/eliminating minimum run time and minimum down times
• Improving ramp rate
• Expanding operating range
• Providing primary frequency response at full load
• Providing primary frequency when the conventional unit is not running
• Providing voltage support when the conventional unit is not running
• Reduce life cycle cost of the conventional generator
• Minimal modifications required to generator/generator controls to enable
benefits of energy store

Hybrid generation is dispatched in the same manner as the conventional generator

• Single resource
• No changes required to existing dispatch templates
• Update operating characteristics: commitment time, minimum run time,
minimum down time, operating range, ramp rate, etc.…
• Enable additional ancillary services: spinning reserves, high speed
regulation, etc.…
• Battery state of charge (SOC) is managed internally which eliminates
energy neutrality issues
• Legacy operation of the conventional generation is maintained
• Existing grid model templates may also be utilized
