Water, Waste Water and Irrigation 

Modern living depends

heavily on water supply,
wastewater removal, and
irrigation, which all
require pumps which are
among the oldest
machines ever
used. These needs
constitute a large market
for pumps and are the
heart of civilization.

Water 

The water that we take from

the faucet gets to us by the
action of pumps, which move
the water through pipelines
from the reservoir to our
homes.
Water may also come from
deep wells which require
vertical deepwell pumps to
bring it to the surface.

chemical products, for
example, requires pumps
for processing.

oil which must be processed at high temperatures and pressures
with the aid of pumps. Operating temperature for such pumps
can be over 800°F.

from wood pulp with the aid of pumps. The machinery shown
is a large rolling mill used in the production of paper.

Electric Power Industry 

Electricity which we use to light

our homes and drive electric
motors is produced in large electric
power generating plants. Electricity
is generated by large turbines
using steam from high pressure
boilers. Many pumps are needed in
this process and make up a third
large market for pumps.
These powerful high pressure
pumps are used to feed water at
high pressure to steam boilers.

Other pumps in power

plants are necessary to
remove the condensed
steam from the bottom of
massive steam
condensers and send it to
heaters which increase
the water temperature.
Heater drain pumps then
move the water to the
boiler feed pump.

Electric Power Industry 

Cold water is needed to

cool the spent steam
and turn it back to
water. These pumps
circulate water from the
cooling tower through
the condenser and back
to the cooling tower
where it is cooled as it
splashes down through

scrubbed by water from pumps in
order to remove solid particles.

Mining and the

refining of metals
is a fourth major
market of pumps.
To facilitate deep
pit mining, pumps
are needed to
remove ground
water.

Mining Industry 

To further resist wear, abrasive-resistant pumps are often made

from hard metals such as white iron, which conforms to ASTM
A532 specification.
A sample casing made from white iron is shown and is usually
about 650 BHN in hardness.

Mining Industry 

A thick rubber lining or coating is also effective in resisting

abrasion. Shown is an impeller that is covered by a flexible
synthetic rubber material.
Impellers designed this way are usually wider than normal to
accommodate lining of the space between vanes.
Rubber-lined pumps are usually limited to solids no larger than 1/8
inch and heads up to about 120 feet.

Metal Industry 

After steel is produced in large ingots, it is heated

and rolled into many different shapes. High pressure
water from pumps removes scale, which appears on
the outside surface of the steel sheets and rods.

is also an important market. Waterslides and
swimming pools need pumps to operate as do boat
rides through tunnels and over rapids.

Oceangoing tankers rely on pumps to fill and empty

their tanks. When combined with Navy applications
they constitute a major market. Nuclear powered
ships and submarines require pumps to operate the
steam power plant the same as in the electric power

to the suction and
discharge pipe. Such
pumps take suction from a
common pipe and
discharge into a common
pipe.

Pumps in Series  

Pumps can also be connected in series, with one pump feeding

directly into another. This installation shows two pumps driven
by the same motor. The discharge flow from Pump A is piped
directly to Pump B. Pump B, in turn, adds energy to the liquid to
satisfy the head requirements of the system.
