Midterm Example 2020

1. Please determine the miller indices for the planes (A, B) shown in the following cubic unit cell. (5+5)

2. Please use HCP crystallographic direction rules to determine the miller indices for the directions (A, B,
C, D) shown in the following HCP structure (12)

3. In this class, we demonstrated atomic force microscopy to you, and also introduced scanning tunneling
microscopy (STM).
(a) Please briefly explain the mechanisms of AFM and of STM, respectively. You may make
illustrations to help us understand your explanations. (5+5)
(b) Explain the advantages and disadvantages for AFM as compared with STM. (5+5)

4. Write down
(a) For the two line defects we introduced, what is their difference in terms of “Burger vector”? (4)
(b) Defects are not always undesired. Please give an example showing that defects are desired. (4)

5. This is an x-ray diffraction pattern (XRD) showing the diffracted peaks and their corresponding
crystallographic planes in a cubic structure.
(a) Use Bragg’s diffraction law (2dsinθ = nλ) and d-spacing concept (dhkl = a/(h2+k2+l2)1/2, where a is
lattice constant), explaining why (200) plane’s peak appears at a higher angle than (110) plane’s peak?

1
(5)
(b) Similarly, why (211) plane’s peak appears at a higher angle than (200) plane’s peak? (5)
(c) Assuming the system is of single element, explain why the peak intensity of (110) is stronger than
(200)? (5)

6. Please use drawings to define the following terms.

(a) Elastic strain recovery (5)
(b) Ductility (5)
(c) Resilience (5)
(d) Tensile strength (5)
(e) Yield strength (5)

7. (a)How many slip planes for a FCC structure? How many slip systems for a FCC structure? (2+3)
(b)How many slip planes for a BCC structure? How many slip systems for a BCC structure? (2+3)
