Juvenile Detention Officer I


Juvenile Court Administration
HIRING RANGE: $17.37 - $18.76 / Hour, DOQ CLOSING DATE: January 12, 2011
SUMMARY: Monitors juveniles held in detention facility and ensures a humane, safe, and rehabilitative environment.
Admits, provides security and releases juveniles from detention. Oversees juvenile activities and visits from authorized
visitors. Maintains detailed records and computer data on juveniles and performs housekeeping and custodial duties.
Complies with legal standards and requirements. Answers questions from parents, probation officers, and other law
enforcement personnel and provides technical assistance and information as authorized. Works under direct supervision.
Observes and records juvenile behavior which may require referral to counselors or medical services and acts as advisor to
assigned juveniles. Oversees and collects urinalysis samples provided by juveniles as assigned. Reports unusual situations to
lead or Detention Manager and assists the education specialists as needed. Works closely with temporary and other staff, as
assigned. Performs all duties of lower- and similarly classified positions and other duties, as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS: Requires a high school diploma or GED AND two years of experience working with at-risk adolescents
or two years of experience working with adolescents in group living settings. A bachelor's degree in social sciences or criminal
justice is desired.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must pass a Physical Abilities Test (PAT) prior to employment and academy attendance.
Requires successful completion of basic corrections academy at the Washington Criminal Justice Training Center within six
months of employment per RCW 43.101.220. Law enforcement level criminal background check must meet County criteria
including disclosure of serious crimes and sex crimes per RCW 43.43. Must have a driving record that meets County standards
and possess a valid driver’s license at time of hire and throughout employment. Must pass a physical examination,
psychological evaluation, and polygraph examination. Must pass other job-related tests. Must complete Hepatitis B
vaccinations or complete a declination statement within six months of employment. Must complete medical privacy training as
part of orientation and annual bloodborne pathogen training. Must successfully complete defensive tactics training, as offered
by the department. Must obtain a First Aid/CPR Card within 90 days of employment and maintain throughout employment.
Required to become a member of the local collective bargaining unit.
