Course Description:
The major emphasis of this course is on the development of basic/practical skills and
knowledge, which students need in order to meet the demands in trans-cultural contexts. The
instructor tries to manage the course by combining formal English learning with critical
thinking and sociolinguistics. In these regards, this course aims at helping students plan their
academic and career future in a practical and realistic manner by working on either an
authentic or a hypothetical resume and a cover letter. Moreover, students will acquire skills in
organizing their thoughts for proposal writing through activating critical thinking.
Throughout this course, students will have an ample opportunity to be exposed to various
samples and practice of the concerned areas.

Course Objectives:
• Facilitate sociolinguistic competence for intercultural interaction and communication
• Produce either an authentic or a hypothetical resume and cover letter (overcoming
conventional and fixed ideas on resume and cover letter)
• Enhance analytic and evaluative skills for creative and critical thinking and problem-
solving ability
• Acquire skills to use plain and clear English for formal documents
• Familiarize process-oriented group discussions
• Gain knowledge on various research types, which is one of the basic requirements for
proposal writing

Course Materials
• Hand-outs and ppts resources will not only be presented in the classroom but also be
uploaded in the Blackboard
• Authentic materials, various examples, and guidelines for activities will be provided
in the classroom through either hand-outs or presentation and they will further be
uploaded.
• Feedback on each student’s work will be provided through either e-mail or face-to-
face interaction
• Hand-outs and presentation ppts will not only be presented in the classroom but also
be uploaded in the Blackboard

Course Requirements: Grading will be based upon the following criteria;


(1) Mid-term evaluation (35 %): Based on resume and cover letter each student produces
(individual evaluation)
(2) Final evaluation (30 %): Group proposal - A power-point-based presentation or a written
proposal based on group discussions
(group evaluation)
*Students can choose either a 10-minute-power-point-based presentation,
or a 4~5 paged written proposal
*Content: How well the proposal reflects the guidelines and required criteria provided.
(3) Course activities (25 %): Individual and group participation and contributions
(peer evaluation)
(3) Attendance (10 %): If you should miss a lecture, you are recommended to catch up what
you have missed by asking either other classmates or instructor.
*Your attendance may affect your group activity assessment.
