Contextualization

This lesson plan is proposed for 5 th grade, conformed by 22 students from Colegio
Británico de Zipaquirá. They are in ages of 9 from 11.
It is a privacy educational institution that offers the next education levels: preschool and
primary with emphasis in Ebglish. This school pretends to educate the new generation of
primary teachers in Colombia.
Teaching model: Constructivism and traditional- hybrid

LESSON PLAN

Name: Marcela Vergara Institution: Colegio Británico de Zipaquirá

City: Zipaquirá Grade: Fourth Age: 9-10

Topic: Fractions Time Frame: 2 hours

Prior knowledge

Students should know

Decimal numbering system

Handling basic operations

Objective(s):

By the end of the class, the students will be able to

• Add operations vertical or horizontally between homogeneous and heterogeneous fractions.

• Identify Mathematical activities where the use of fractions is necessary, which should approach
students to the notion of the fraction.
• Establish teaching for mathematical activities of daily life that they provide. data on the notions of
fractional objects.
• Use fractions to name different parts of a unit.
• Recognize means, thirds and quarters by dividing groups or figures.
• Recognize equivalent fractions in graphic representations.
Competences

The student interprets the fractions in different contexts: measurement situations, part-whole relationships,
quotient, and proportions.

The student uses fractions to solve problems in measurement contexts.

ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION TIMING TEACHING RESOURCES

Warm-Up: Game called “Simon says”

At the beginning of the lesson to wake everyone up!

The teacher says:

Simon says... “hands up and down”, touch your head,

"Jump 10 times", "Turn around 4 times", “stand up & sit
down” and so on.

Finally, teacher says “Simon says sit down. As soon as

they are ready to listen to the class the teacher explains the
objective of the class and the topic they will study.

Introduction: Computer

The teacher shows a video the following video called Speakers

When do we use fractions in real life? Projector

How are improper fractions and mixed numbers the same?

Presentation:

Meaningful object counting; Show children some postcards

with objects and ask them to count them. At the end ask
“How many” individually to check if students can recognize
the correct amount of the objects. Repeat with different
postcards or objects.

Later the students watch the video then, the teacher makes
a brief explanation about the topic.

First, the teacher draws a picture of a square on the board.

She divides this shape into four equal parts, shading in 1

section. Then, the teacher asks to the students how many

parts are shaded? (1/4).

Then, the teacher explains that this is a fraction because 1

of 4 equal parts is shaded and emphasize that the “parts”
must be equal. She does a few more examples using
different shapes.
She also demonstrates how to write a fraction and identify
the numerator and the denominator.

Assessment & Evaluation

The teacher gives students a worksheet in which they need

to complete some exercises related to the main topic of the
class.

Show each child two different groups of elements, for

example, one homogeneous and one heterogeneous and ask
them to determine which group each belongs.
You can find the evaluation below.

Interpret the fractions in different contexts, measurement

situations of everything, reasons and proportions.
Assignment

The teacher asks students to write down some exercises in order they can develop them at home. They need
to complete the charts.

Feedback:

The teacher will call each student, and the child will count the items on the plate and say the total. The
teacher will correct any mistakes the children make.
