CPEC a project:
China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), massive bilateral project to
improve infrastructure within Pakistan for better trade with China and to further integrate the countries of the
region. The[ CITATION The20 \l 1033 ] project was launched on April 20, 2015 when Chinese President Xi
Jinping and Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif signed 51 agreements and Memorandums of Understanding
valued at $46 billion.

Goal:
The goal of CPEC is both to transform Pakistan’s economy—by modernizing its road, rail, air,[ CITATION Scr96 \l
1033 ] and energy transportation systems—and to connect the deep-sea Pakistani ports
of Gwadar and Karachi to China’s Xinjiang province and beyond by overland routes. (Xinjiang borders the
countries of Mongolia, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India, and the
ancient Silk Road ran through its territory.) This would reduce the time and cost of transporting goods and
energy [ CITATION RVL95 \l 1033 ]such as natural gas to China by circumventing the Straits of Malacca and
the South China Sea. The announcement of joint space and satellite initiatives between Pakistan and China,
spurred by CPEC, followed in 2016.

Larger Belt:
CPEC is part of the larger Belt and Road Initiative—to improve connectivity, trade, communication, and
cooperation between the countries [ CITATION Qua18 \l 1033 ]of Eurasia—announced by China in 2013. CPEC
has been compared to the Marshall Plan for the rebuilding of post-World War II Europe[ CITATION Pak16 \l
1033 ] in its potential impact on the region, and numerous countries have shown interest in participating in
the initiative.

Silk Road:
Originating at Xi’an (Sian), the 4,000-mile (6,400-km) road, actually a caravan tract, followed the Great Wall of
China to the northwest, bypassed the Takla [ CITATION DrN17 \l 1033 ]Makan Desert, climbed
the Pamirs (mountains), crossed Afghanistan, and went on to the Levant; from there the merchandise was
shipped across [ CITATION Muh06 \l 1033 ]the Mediterranean Sea. Few persons traveled the entire route, and
goods were handled in a staggered progression by middlemen.

Loss of Roman Territory:

With the gradual loss of Roman territory in Asia and the rise of Arabian power in the Levant, [ CITATION
Mil06 \l 1033 ]the Silk Road became increasingly unsafe and untraveled. In the 13th and 14th centuries the
route was revived under the Mongols, and at that time the Venetian Marco Polo used it to travel
to Cathay (China). It is now widely thought that [ CITATION Len15 \l 1033 ]the route was one of the main ways
that[ CITATION Had16 \l 1033 ] plague bacteria responsible for the Black Death pandemic in Europe in the mid-
14th century moved westward from Asia.

Karakorum Highway:
The CPEC projects call for reconstruction and upgrade works on National Highway 35 (N-35), which forms the
Pakistani portion of the Karakoram Highway (KKH). The KKH spans the 887-kilometer long distance between
the China-Pakistan border [ CITATION Gov15 \l 1033 ]and the town of Burhan, near Hasan Abdal. At Burhan,
the existing M1 motorway will intersect the N-35 at the Shah Maqsood Interchange. From there, access
onwards to Islamabad and Lahore continues [ CITATION Egy16 \l 1033 ]as part of the existing M1 and M2
motorways. Burhan will also be at the intersection of the Eastern Alignment, and Western Alignment.

Roadway Projects:
The CPEC project envisages major upgrades and overhauls to Pakistan's transportation infrastructure.
[ CITATION CPE18 \l 1033 ]Under the CPEC project, China has announced financing for $10.63 billion worth of
transportation infrastructure so far; $6.1 billion have been allocated for constructing "Early Harvest" roadway
projects at an interest rate of 1.6 percent.  The remainder of funds will be allocated when the Pakistani
government awards contracts [ CITATION CPE17 \l 1033 ]for the construction of road segments which are still
in the planning phase.

Three corridors have been identified for cargo transport: the Eastern Alignment through the heavily populated
provinces of Sindh and Punjab where most industries are located, the Western Alignment through the less
developed and more sparsely populated[ CITATION Bee89 \l 1033 ] provinces of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and
Baluchistan, and the future Central Alignment which will pass[ CITATION Arc08 \l 1033 ] through Khyber
Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, and Baluchistan.[ CITATION Gov08 \l 1033 ]
