Furukawa Electric Building Fiber Optic Cables Plant in Colombia

The Japanese multinational company, Furukawa Electric Group, expands its international participation investing
approximately US$5 million in Valle del Cauca through the construction of an optic fiber cables plant. With over 125
years of market history, the Furukawa Electric Group comes to Colombia with the construction of this optic fiber cables
plant, to be installed in the Pacific Duty Free Zone, in the municipality of Palmira, Valle del Cauca. The first production
in the plant is expected to take place in February 2014. The plant will be the first of its kind in the
Andean region and the third Furukawa telecommunications plant in South America.
Although Furukawa has been selling structured cabling for the last five years in Colombia through its distribu-

tors, the construction of the optic fiber cables plant will be an internal operation of the Japan-based company. The
decision to settle in Valle del Cauca will allow importation of raw materials and exportation of finished products to
countries located in the Pacific Ocean area, with the plant being the production and distribution hub for the Andean
and Central American regions.
According to Furukawa Electric company Directors, the estimated investment in Colombia will be US$5 million
dollars within the period from 2013 to 2016. Some 25 high-quality direct jobs will be initially created per production
shift and another 200 indirect jobs resulting from the entire supply chain (civil works construction, logistics, transport,
meals, supplies, etc.). The company also said that there will be top-level technical empowerment processes.

Prysmian, Milan, Italy, has tested
the first electrical system that
includes high-voltage P-Laser
cable. P-Laser is the first high-
performance, eco-sustainable
cable for electrical grids. Made
with recyclable raw materials,
P-Laser helps
to reduce the
environmental impact of electrical
grids while increasing their effi-
ciency and transmission capacity.
High-voltage P-Laser maintains
the same properties of efficiency,
compatibility with the existing
grid and lower environmental
impact. The cable can operate at
temperatures above the typical
90°C of traditional XLPE technol-
ogy, while the materials used for
the protective sheath, the metal
conductor and the outer cable
screens are fully recyclable.
The 150 kV, 5 km link near Mi-
lan, Italy, owned by Terna SpA,
represents a fundamental step
in the reorganization of the high-
voltage transmission grid in the
southwest area of Milan, that
will allow connections to be op-
timized under a medium-term
program. PryCam, developed
by Prysmian Group, has been
installed at the two extremes
of the approximately half-km
long P-Laser section. It allows
any pulse signals generated by
partial discharges to be moni-
tored and accurately measured,
thereby preventing failures and
the related costs, by monitoring
the different parts of the electrical
grid without having to switch it off.

APWC appoints Ivan Hsia
as new Chief Financial Officer
Asia Pacific Wire & Cable Cor-

that Ivan Hsia has been
appointed as the company’s new
Chief Financial Officer (CFO).
Hsia will replace Frank Tseng
who is stepping down from his po-

Tseng will also assist the company
during the transition period.
Hsia joined the company in 2011
and has served APWC initially as
Senior Manager of the company’s

Family Die Business Closing After 71 Years:
Luginbill Die Auction Scheduled for August 28, 2013
Luginbill Die Co., Inc., a fifth-generation
die business located in New Haven, IN,
USA, is ceasing operations and will sell
off all of its equipment, inventory and
real estate at an auction on Wednesday,
Aug. 28, 2013.
“We’ve been roughing it for a while,” said
Joy Luginbill, the company controller
and wife of President Kip Luginbill, who
cited competition from low-cost foreign
dies as forcing them out of the market.
She noted that she and Kip were near
retirement age and that their sons (Chip,
Gy and Ty) have had job offers both in
and out of the die industry, so now is a
good time to close down the family busi-
ness. She said that the company, which
at its zenith had employed 50 people,
had seen those numbers pared down
over the years to 18 to 20, and more
recently just to a skeleton crew. Joy said
that barring a potential buyer coming
forward to purchase all the equipment
and/or the property, the focus is now on
getting the word out about the auction,
which will be held on-line.
The list of sale items includes over 15,000
new and used diamond and carbide dies;
100 carats of loose industrial diamonds;
50,000 carats of diamond powder; a
diamond lapping wheel; various sizes

Nexans Wins Two Major
Power Cable Contracts
Nexans, Paris, France, has been
awarded a major contract by
OneSubsea (a Cameron &
Schlumberger company) to
design, manufacture and supply
an integrated power umbilical
solution and associated termi-
nation hardware for Exxon Mo-
bil Corporation’s Julia oil field
development in the deep-water
Gulf of Mexico. A 23 km length of
Nexans’ innovative power um-
bilical, which combines power
cables and um-
bilicals in a single
cross-section, will be installed
at water depths over 2000 m
to tieback the Julia field subsea
systems to a semi-submersible
production unit. Production
start-up is scheduled for 2016.
Nexans was also awarded con-
tracts worth over €20 million to
design, manufacture and install
EHV (extra-high-voltage) cable
systems for two of Europe’s lead-
ing TSOs (Transmission System
Operators)—Terna of Italy and
Amprion of Germany.
Terna Rete Italia’s new 380 kV
project is aimed at improv-
ing the quality of the electricity
network serving southeastern
Sicily, especially as electricity
production in this area increases
both through conventional and
renewable sources. Nexans will
design, supply, install and test
two major EHV underground
cable circuits connecting the
Priolo and Melilli power stations
in the province of Siracusa.

LEONI Researches Fast Data
Transmission of the Future

research project, which is sub-
sidized by the Federal Ministry
for the Economy and Technol-
ogy, and which aims to achieve
a technological leap in data

ing studied.
As a part of this project, LEONI

models for incorporation into the
100 Gbit/s transmission system.
The findings from the research
project will be the basis for
the development of new cable

(rated 125°C; 1000 V).
ANSI/NEMA HP 8 covers spe-
cific requirements for crosslinked,
modified polyolefin insulated
solid and stranded wire, de-
signed to the internal wiring of
high reliability electrical and elec-
tronic equipment. It addresses
600 volt (Type LS, ZHDM, ZHDH,
ZH) and 1000 volt (Type ZHX) wire
and permits continuous conduc-
tor temperature ratings of from
-40°C to + 90°C, 105°C or 125°C
with either tin or silver-coated
conductors. The major revisions
to this standard include a refer-

Manager at Carris Reels

Roussel serves as technical in-
dustry liaison to the Association of
Postconsumer Plastics Recyclers,
Sustainable Packaging Coalition,
Foodservice Packaging Institute
and ASTM. His background in resin
performance and prior experience
in wire and cable will complement
the Carris Plastics Team in the USA
states of Vermont and Virginia, and
in Mexico. Roussel is based in the
Carris corporate office in Proctor.

Prysmian SpA reports
1st half 2013 results
In reporting its first half results
for 2013 for the period ending June
30, 2013, Prysmian SpA, Milan,
Italy, said that it saw an improving
second-quarter trend in sales and
profitability as well as growth for
submarine systems and industrial
cables. Building wires and renew-
able energy cables are still under
pressure in Eu-
rope and weak
optical cable demand was reported
in North and South America pend-
ing new stimulus packages.
Prysmian reported sales in the
first half of 2013 at €3622 million,
down 5.3% versus with €3916 mil-
lion in the first half of 2012. Net profit
for the first half of 2013 was reported
at €115 million, down by 10.9% as
compared with last year’s net profit
of €129 million.
Prysmian said it expects further
improvement in the second half of
2013, with an EBITDA target of from
€600 million to €650 million.
The company also reported that
its Power Transmission order book
has climbed to a record level of
more than €2.8 billion.
