The First Pillar of Islam - Shahadah – Faith

* It is the most important pillar of Islam

The Second Pillar of Islam - Salah – Daily Prayers

* 5 times a day anywhere facing Mecca (dawn, noon, mid-afternoon, sunset, and nighttime before going
to bed)

The Third Pillar of Islam - Zakat – Giving to Charity (Alms)

* Giving 2.5% of your income to the needy, which used to be required but is now optional
* Zakat – means purification and growth (cutting back balances and encourages new growth)

The Fourth Pillar of Islam - Sawm – Fasting

* During the month of Ramadan (9th month of Islamic calendar), Muslims fast (no food or drink) and
abstain from sexual relations during the daylight hours (from sunrise to sunset) as a method of spiritual
self-purification – A fasting person gains true sympathy with those who go hungry

The Fifth Pillar of Islam - Hajj – Pilgrimage

* Once in their lives – IF they are physically and/or financially able to - Muslims make a pilgrimage to
Mecca, which is annually performed in the twelfth month of the Islamic calendar. Male pilgrims wear
