ENG105 Engineering Dynamics Tutorial 04

1. Arm AB is attached to a circular wheel, diameter 180 mm, at pin B and slides along the
rod CD. This is known as a slider crank. Knowing that at time t = 0 the pin starts from
rest and moves so that its speed increases at a constant rate of 20 mm/s2. Determine the
magnitude of the total velocity and acceleration of pin B at t = 0 and t = 2 sec. (v = 0
mm/s, a = 20 mm/s2, v = 40 mm/s, a = 26.8 mm/s2)

2. A cam is used to control the timing of an engine valve. The path of a cam follower is
defined by r = b(2 + cosπt) and θ = πt, t is in seconds, θ in radians and r in mm. b is a
constant. Determine (a) the velocity and acceleration of the cam follower when t = 2 sec
and (b) the angle θ when the velocity has a maximum. ((a) v = 3πb eθ, a = -4π2b er, (b) θ
= (2n+1) π, n = 0, 1, 2…)

3. The hydraulic cylinder OA rotates around axis O. The exposed length L of the piston
driven rod AB is controlled by the action of oil pressure in the cylinder, as shown below.
The cylinder rotates at the constant rate of 𝜃 = 60 deg/s anticlockwise and the length of
the exposed rod AB given by length L is decreasing at the constant rate of 150 mm/s.
When θ = 30° the length L = 125 mm. Calculate: a) The velocity v of end B, b) the total
acceleration a of end B. (v = 0.545 m/s 44° ↖ , a = 0.63 m/s2 59.8° ↙ )
