The worldwide North refers to advanced societies of Europe and North America which
are characterized with the aid of established democracy, wealth, technological development,
political stability, getting older population, zero population growth, and dominance of global
alternate and politics. The worldwide South represents especially agrarian economies in Africa,
India, China, Latin America, and others that aren't as economically sound and politically stable
as their global North opposite numbers and have a tendency to be characterized via turmoil,
conflict, conflict, poverty, anarchy and tyranny (Odeh, 2010). In quick, the worldwide North is
synonymous with development, at the same time as the worldwide South is related to
underdevelopment.

Assignment 6: Metacognitive Reading Report
1. The things that I significantly learned from the readings are:
The separation of ‘third world’ and ‘first world’ or ‘global south’ and ‘global north’
countries have always existed. The categorization has always been perceived as a
measure of a country’s development. Generally, countries classified as ‘first world’ or
‘global north’ countries are countries that have booming economies, massive powers,
and strong political holds and vice versa for ‘third world’ or ‘global south’ countries.
As McFarlane cited in his paper, knowledge generally travels from wealthier to poorer
countries. There is a lingering tendency to view the global south as a place that
“knowledge travels to rather than from.” This perspective paints the global north
countries as the epitome of wisdom and global south countries as illiterate and barbaric.
Currently, globalization is at play. From economic integrations to cultural exchanges,
globalization has shaped the modern world. Despite this, we are still far from a
‘globality’ as Manfred B. Steger coined. The existence of the global north and south is a
major wedge between us and globality. This asymmetry in wealth and power has put
some countries on a pedestal and others in the mud. As a person living in the 21st
century, I can see how this is causing problems. Economic unions, due to different
economic development levels tend to have major problems. Some countries are getting
even poorer and some getting even richer. We need to address this problem.

2. The three things that are still unclear to me are:

The concrete definition of the North-South divide
The vague distinction between the global north and south countries
Euro-American Social Sciences

3. I used to think that the world is only divided by continents, and there is no like this
separation of countries.

4. The three questions I want to ask the readings are:

How do radical and liberal views translate to a country’s development?
Does knowledge solely flow from wealthier to poorer countries?
What definition of Global North and South was used in the article?
