FOREWORD

This Self Learning Kit is designed to guide pupils in their

understanding of the different types of mixtures and their
characteristics. The learning activities are fashioned after the
7E Inquiry Model to reinforce their understanding and provide
experiences to further deepen their understanding of the
above mentioned competency.

This Self Learning Kit is divided into three parts:

I. What Happened

The pupils will answer a pretest. They are mentally

engaged by the activities that elicit prior knowledge.

II. What You Need to Know

The pupils will use their prior knowledge to inquire and

generate ideas and carry out hands-on activities to
make sense of a concept. Concepts and skills are
explained and additional activities are given to apply
learning to a new situation.

III. What Have I Learned

Pupils will evaluate their understanding of the

concepts and transfer newly acquired knowledge
and skills to new situations within the domain.

May I take your order?
What refreshing drinks would you prefer on a hot
afternoon?

Tropical Refreshing Drinks

(Beverages & Desserts)
Calamansi Juice Fruit Salad
Pineapple Juice Buko Salad
Buko Juice Halo-halo
Melon Juice Sago’t Gulaman

What is your preferred refresher drinks? What is it made up of

(ingredients)?
Do you know how to make it yourself?

What is common with all these tropical refreshing drinks? Yes!

They are all made of more than one ingredient and they are
called Mixtures. All these beverages and desserts are examples
of mixtures. We discover what are mixtures, what are the kinds of
mixtures and describe the appearance of homogeneous and
heterogeneous mixtures.

II. What You Need To Know

MIXTURES

Mixtures are substances composed of two or more forms of

matter. It is made up of two or more substances physically mixed
together but no new substance is formed. The word “physical”
means that the substances combined have retained their physical
properties and can still be separated through physical means. It
can come in any form. It may be in solid, liquid or gaseous form.

There are infinite number of mixtures. Most of the food we

eat is a combination of different things. Rarely do we eat only one
ingredient. For example, we can eat plain fish, and mix it with
seasonings and vegetables.

6
Can you name some food which can be considered as a mixture?

Activity 1 Sasak Sinagol

Materials & Procedure:
1. Before preparing the two recipes be sure to wash your hands
thoroughly.
2. Prepare all ingredients beforehand.

Ensaladang Talong
Ingredients:
1. 2-3 pieces of eggplant
2. 1 medium size sliced (hiniwa) tomato
3. I medium-sized red minced (gipino-pino) onion
4. ¼ cup of white vinegar
5. ¼ teaspoon of salt
6. ¼ teaspoon of granulated white sugar
Procedure:
1. Roast (sugba) the eggplants until the skin looks
burned.
2. Peel the skin off, cut the stem off then cut eggplant
into 3 inch length.
3. In a bowl, combine vinegar, salt, pepper, sugar,
tomato, and onion. Stir to mix.
4. Add the roasted eggplant. Mix. Let it stay for at
least 5 minutes.
5. Transfer to a serving bowl. Serve.

7
Calamansi/Orange Juice
Ingredients:
1. 1 sachet of a 25g orange juice/ 10-15 pcs. kalamansi
2. 1 liter of cold water
Procedure:
1. Fill the pitcher with 1 liter of cold water
2. Open the sachet of orange juice/slice the kalamansi and squeeze.
Extract the juice and pour its contents on a pitcher with 1 liter of cold
water.
3. Stir well until the powdered juice is thoroughly dissolved/ the
calamansi juice is properly mixed.

Answer the following questions:

1. What ingredients are mixed to make the orange/calamansi
juice?
2. What happen to the juice and the water?
3. How many phases of matter (solid, liquid or gas) can you see
inside the pitcher of juice?
4. How did you prepare the Ensaladang Talong? Can you still
identify the ingredients used in preparing the Ensaladang
Talong?
5. How many phases of matter (solid, liquid or gas) can you see
in the bowl of Ensaladang talong?
6. What kind of a mixture is the Ensaladang Talong? The Orange
juice/kalamansi juice?

Fill out the given table.

8
HOMOGENEOUS AND HETEROGENEOUS MIXTURE
There are two types of mixture: homogenous and
heterogeneous mixture. Homogeneous mixture is formed when
substances, appears to be of one uniform phase. The
orange/kalamansi juice is an example of a homogeneous mixture
because the dissolved powdered juice is evenly distributed
throughout and it is one phase –
liquid. It taste the same from the first glass to the last drop. You
can’t pick out the components of a homogeneous mixture or use
simple mechanical means to separate them. You can’t see
individual ingredients in this type of mixture.
Despite mixing all the ingredients in preparing the Ensaladang
Talong you will still be able to identify most of them. They still retain
their phases (solid) and can still be identified or distinguished from
one another and the ingredients can still be picked up one by one.
Ensaladang Talong is an example of a heterogeneous mixture.

The Difference between Homogeneous and Heterogeneous

Mixture
It has a uniform composition It has a non-uniform
composition
It has only one phase There are two or more phases
It can’t be separated out It can be separated out
physically physically
“homo” means the same “hetero” means different

Uniform composition means identical wherever you sample it – it

has uniform or the same composition and properties throughout
