CONCEPT NOTES

Communication
 the act or process of using words, sounds, signs, or behaviors to express or exchange information or to express
your ideas, thoughts, feelings, etc., to someone else (http://www.merriam-webster.com)
 the exchange of information and the expression of feeling that can result in understanding
(http://dictionary.cambridge.org)
 Communication is derived from the latin word “Communis”, which means “to share”. It can be sharing of ideas,
concepts, feelings and emotions. Communication creates meaning through the exchange of messages. The prefix
“C-O-M” means “together”. There must be an understanding or a coming together for successful communication
to take place.
2 ways to communicate:

Verbal Communication Non-verbal Communication


 Through the words we use.  Bodily actions and vocal qualities that

Types of Communication:
1. Intrapersonal Communication
 involves talking to yourself. It may involve deliberation, where you think about your decisions or possible
courses of action.
2. Interpersonal Communication
 involves talking to one or a limited number of people. It can be dyad or small group.
3. Public Communication
 Involves communicating to a wide group of people with very varied traits, background, interests and
persuasion.
4. Intercultural Communication
 Involves communicating with person of group of people who may not share same assumptions, values,
allegiances, as that of yours and may have different associations, with the symbols you take for granted
for having a particular meaning.

Exercise 1: Choose an object to which you can compare communication and explain your reasons why. Write an essay
and be creative with your answer.
