Boston Consulting Group and GE Matrix

1. What is the difference between BCG and GE?

BCG and GE matrix both are used for strategic management of the business. The

difference between both the matrices can only be understandable if key of them are

known. BCG framework compromises of four cells whereas GE framework comprises of

nine cells. The specialty unit is appraised against relative piece of the pie and industry

development rate in former matrix however the business unit is appraised against

business quality and industry allure in later. In BCG matrix, the framework utilized

4. Relate the BCG with the product life cycle.

Activity 3

National Book Store’s Socorro Ramos

1. What virtues did Nanay Coring show as an entrepreneur?

She shows entrepreneurial spirit with courage, determination and hard work. She gambles

and greatly believes in herself, that no matter what, nothing is impossible if you do try.

2. Trace the rags to riches story of Socorro Ramos.

Her story is truly an inspiring one as she built the business national bookstore from

scratch with a lot of challenges and hurdles as she and her husband Jose Ramos literally

built and rebuilt the business three times from scratch.Way back then, her parents had a

store, selling a lot of stuffs from slippers to clothes, while her grandmother usually had

market stall. Her grandmother usually had withdrawn their products by credits. Due to

her grandmother mismanagement, their business fail. After that event, they went to

manila and she did summer jobs, to earn money. After she graduated in Arellano high

school, she worked as a sales girl in goodwill bookstore, owned by the family owned by

the family of Jose Ramos, now her present husband. Socorro said, it wasn’t easy for them

to start a business from a scratch. First, during Japanese occupation, they hadn’t sold

books for a reason. Second, when Japanese where driven away by the Americans, their

store was damage in the war. WWII, they decided to relocate their store from Escolta to

Avenida. The business was quite doing well, but unfortunately, the strong typhoon blew

the roofs of their store; left soaked books and stuffs which were worthless. Again, for the

third time, they had to start from zero.

But because of her entrepreneurship spirit with courage and determination, they

overcome all those barriers. And now, place as the number spot; the biggest bookstore of

our country. Socorro Ramos also known as Nanay Coring one of the wealthiest

businesswoman in the Philippines.

Activity 4

Business Excellence Model

1. What is the general concept of business excellence?

Business Excellence as described by the European Foundation for Quality Management

(EFQM), refers to; outstanding practices in managing the organization and achieving

results, all based on a set of eight fundamental concepts these being, results orientation,

customer focus; leadership and constancy of purpose; management by process and facts;

people development and involvement; continuous learning, innovation and improvement;

partnership development; and public responsibility. In general, business excellence

models have been developed by national bodies as a basis for award programs.

2. Compare the fundamental concepts of each business excellence model.

Several business excellence models exist worldwide. While variations exist, these models

are all remarkably similar. The most common include, Baldrige (MBNQA) used in over

25 countries including U.S and NZ, this model consist of practices that are incorporated

into six approach categories plus a result category.

European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM)- used throughout Europe, this

model consists of six process enablers and one results category.

3. What concept do all the business excellence model have? Why?

The models through the eight fundamental concepts serves as bases for national bodies of

different countries to award outstanding organizations. Aside from recognizing excellent

organizational performance the model serve as self-monitoring and assessment for many

organizations.

4. Analyze the general intentions of coming up the business excellence models and how

they affect organizational performance.

In general, business excellence models have been developed by the national bodies as a

basis for award programs. For most of these bodies, the awards themselves are secondary

in importance in the wide spread- take up of the concepts of business excellence, which

ultimately lead to improved national economic performance.
