FOCUS:

WHAT IS OBE
ABOUT OBE
What OBE stands for?
 OBE stands for “outcome based education”
What is OBE?
A student-centred learning philosophy that focuses on measuring student
performance, which are called outcomes.

"It is what the student does that he learns, not what the
teacher does".
(Tyler, R.W. (1949) Basic Principles of Curriculum and Instruction . Chicago:
University of Chicago)

“The logic is stunningly obvious: Say what you want

students to be able to do, teach them to do it and then
see if they can, in fact, do it.”
(Biggs. J & Tang. C. (2007) Teaching for Quality Learning at University, 3rd ed, p.177.
Open University Press.)
ABOUT OBE
What is OBE?
 The basic framework of OBE consists of five main elements:
 (a) the course content or the syllabus, which is the core;
 (b) the intended learning outcomes(ILOs) derived from the
course content;
 (c) the teaching and learning activities (TLAs) designed to
facilitate the achievement of those outcomes;
 (d) the design of assessment tasks (ATs) aimed at assessing
the learning outcomes; and
 (e) assessment rubrics to help assess the achievement of the
learning outcomes and to determine the level at which the
outcomes have been achieved, called CQI.
Alignment of TLAs with ILOs is as important as the alignment of ATs
with ILOs to successfully implement OBE

Classify learning outcomes
 When specifying learning outcomes, think about what you want
students to be able to do on the job as a result of their learning.
 Units of learning fall into three possible categories (domains):
 thinking, knowledge (cognitive domain) (K)/(C)
 doing, skills (psychomotor domain) (S)/(P)
 feeling, attitudes (affective domain) (A)
 Of course, some units of learning may occur in more than one
domain at the same time.
 Each of these categories has different possible levels of learning.
These range from simple recall or observation to the complex
evaluation or organization of information.

Mapping of CLOs and ATs
 Most Effective and Major AT is the written examination
 Question Paper of each course must be mapped with CLOs
 Example: A question paper of a course of 3CH (180 Min)
(To attempt 5 questions)
