Target batting

Duration 10-15 minutes

Equipment 1 tee, 3 balls, 4 cones/markers, 1 bat and 1 wicket per group of 4
Area Size Depending on class size, enough to have groups spaced out at
least 5 metres from each other
Instructions Students are to be put into groups of 4:
- Set up a tee, then two cones 10 metres from the tee as
goals
- Two students are taking turns batting 3 times each, the
other two are fielding the ball once it’s been hit off the tee
to the goals
- Once one pair has hit 6 balls (an over), pairs swap over
- Explain simple front foot drive key teaching points to
students
Variation and - Change the distance of the tee to suit the age and ability of
Progression students
- Size of goals can also be changed to suit students
- Instead of having goals, just have one cone for the batters
to try aim for
- Have the fielders try stop the ball before it gets through
the goals, if it gets past the batter gets a point
Teachable Moment Having students in groups, you can add two extra cones on their
side of the original goals to create a scoring game. The two fielders
pick a space to stand in and the batter needs to aim the ball into
the empty space. Fielders change spaces for each ball to
encourage the batter to bat with more accuracy to different
angles.
Organisation:
Leave adequate
spacing between
each group.
Teachers should
position themselves
where they can see
all students to
provide adequate
feedback.

Junk yard batting
Duration 15 minutes
Equipment 1 wicket, 1 ball, 3 cones/markers, 1 bat per group of 4
Area Size Depending on class size, enough to have groups spaced out at
least 5 metres from each other
Instructions Students are to be put into groups of 4:
- Set up wicket and one cone directly opposite 10 metres
away
- The other two cones are to be placed 5 metres to either
the left or right of the bowler’s cone set up as a goal
section
- One student is to be batting, one bowling, one wicket
keeping and the other fielding
- The bowler underarm throws the ball to the batter, the
batter attempts to hit the ball to the direction of the goals.
The fielder or wicket keeper gets the ball and returns it to
the bowler. After 6 balls, the students rotate. The batter
becomes wicket keeper, wicket keeper becomes bowler,
bowler becomes fielder and fielder becomes batter.
Variation and - Change the distance of the tee to suit the age and ability of
Progression students
- Size of goals can also be changed to suit students
- Instead of having goals, just have one cone or object for
the batters to try aim for
- Have the fielders try stop the ball before it gets through
the goals, if it gets past the batter gets a point
Teachable Moment If students are comfortable, get them to also practice bowling the
ball to the batter. If they are unsuccessful after a couple, just
encourage them to underarm throw so the drill can focus on the
batting and aiming skill of cricket.
