OPPORTUNITIES, CHALLENGES, PROBLEMS AND ISSUES

Anything that goes viral on the internet becomes an instant trending and popular topic. These concrete
examples of how media can influence the economy, education, society and politics.

Economy

Nowadays, there is an influx of business process outsourcing companies, which are responsible for providing
technical support and customer service agent, medical transcripscionist, marketing and real state agents and
many others.

Social media is also helping to fuel the global economy by creating new jobs, democratizing information and
pushing brands far beyond their boarders. Before social media, brands had to pay top dollar for traditional
online advertising that may not have reached their target markets. Now, business own and create their digital
media content, breaking down the barriers to reach new audiences. With the use of the internet, government
agencies like Department of Tourism and Department of Agriculture can inform the public about their
programs, new policies and announcements. In this way, if a farmer or a researcher has a concern an
agricultural products, sending inquiries can be done remotely through e-mail.

Education

There are different ways on how teachers can use modern technology in presenting lessons to students. Gone
are the days when they do not have any choice but to manually make their visual aids in order to impact
knowledge to their pupils. The following are the examples of modern visual aids that can be used by lecturers
all over the world.

o Pocket Chart
o Educational Toys
o Educational Compacts
o Digital Versatile
o Etc.

The world is getting smaller and through the use of technology such as social media the way we deliver
instruction is changing. Social media and education can complement one another effectively. The technology
referred to here really transpires just social media technologies such as Facebook, Twitter, and Snapchat. The
technologies that allow these platforms to function are also one of the driving forces behind the impact of this
technology on education.

What is the impact of Social media on students?

Advantage:

1. Increase student interest

2. Collaboration
3. Improved Participation
4. Content Rich Resources
5. Useful for team Projects

Disadvantage:

1. Students distraction can become an issue

2. Lack of control for inappropriate content
3. Relying on Social Media for all contact

In addition, there are sites available on the internet which allow teachers, students and parents to interact with
one another for the purpose of learning . Foe example, the website www.edmodo.com gives users an
opportunity to discussed about their school concerns without having to meet in person. Some websites can
also be used to find reliable supplementary learning materials such as www. Aquipper.com. this websites holds
portal of notes and quizzes about subjects covered in school.

Society

Social media can help people to feel connected and happy to connect with old friends and family. On the other
hand, these same connections can be used for dangerous cybercrime. The internet may be a source of
motivational messages, videos or blogs spots or healthy living. However, It’s just as possible that these very
message can prevent you from getting out there and living. Due to TV commercials and print advertisements,
many people tend to base their perception of beauty on a person’s physical looks instead of his talents and
intrinsic qualities.

Therefore, with media being a powerful means to send and receive messages the people must be more careful
in choosing the kind of media to patronize so that their values and standards will not be compromised.

POLITICS

The power of media and information is strong and wide enough to reach all people from different fields. As
information has become easily accessible using the internet, the profiles and other intimate personal details
about public servant or a political leader can easily have access to the latest local and national news wherever
they are. Asking citizens to support relief operations during calamities by volunteering and giving out donations
has become easier because of the TV advertisements and social media posts that they regularly see.

THE FOLLOWING ARE THE DIFFERENT RISKS FROM THE ABUSE AND MISUSE OF MEDIA AND
INFORMATION

o Libel
o Slander
-Misquotation
-Mislebaling
o Anti-Obscenity Law
o Sedition
o Contempt of Court
o Piracy
In today’s time, accessing information has been much easier and faster, but it does not authorize anybody to
illegally upload information that will be considered obscene and offensive. Additionally, copyrighted materials
deemed informative for the public’s interest should not be shared indiscriminately without due permission. As a
democratic country, Filipino citizens are entitled to freedom of expression, but we should not abuse it is we
also need to respect the right of others. Due to this, the misuse of one’s freedom of expression can merit legal
sanctions.

CURRENT AND FUTURE TRENDS OF MEDIA AND INFORMATION

Nowadays, gadgets are made through complex and state of the art technology. The appliances that we have at
home and in the office are no longer just meant for survival; instead, they are now used to defines one’s
lifestyle and provide comfort and convenience to people. Let us learn about the available technology we have
that defines current emerging trends on media and information.

1. Wearable Technology
It literally means that they can be worn like an accessory as they are small and lightweight, but durable
enough to be put in the pocket of your pants or bags. Examples are Pedometer and Hearing Aid.
Wearable Technology like headphones or mobile phones.
2. Google Glass
For people with poor vision, wearing eyeglasses allows them to see things clearly. However, it has
other grand feature designed for user’s convenience. Google Glass is a wearable, voice- and motion-
controlled Android device that resembles a pair of eyeglasses and displays information directly in the
user's field of vision. Google Glass offers an augmented reality experience by using visual, audio and
location-based inputs to provide relevant information. For example, upon entering an airport, a user
could automatically receive flight status information. When the first version was launched in 2013,
consumers immediately voiced their concern of the glasses being an invasion of privacy. Google Glass
represented inescapable recording in everyday life. At first, Google attempted to rebrand the glasses
as a tool for professionals such as surgeons or factory workers. However, concern remained and
Google ceased all work on the Glass project in 2015. Google Glass was publicly announced in 2012
and was made available for purchase in 2013 at 1500 US Dollars.
3. Apple Watch
The Apple Watch is a smartwatch that operates as a small wearable computing device worn on a
user's wrist. The Apple Watch was officially announced on September 9th, 2014, with availability of the
new device expected in early 2015. Pricing for the Apple Watch will start at $349. While most analysts
expected the device to be released under the Apple iWatch moniker, Apple surprised many by
deviating from the "i" pattern of naming its new devices like the iPod, iPhone and iPad. As watch, it
gives accurate time and can be set in digital or analog mode. It can also be use as timer and an alarm.
In addition, it can be a health and fitness monitor as it provides visual images of the user’s daily
activities, which motivates them to sit less and be more active.

EMERGING TREND ON MEDIA AND INFORMATION

Below are some examples of gadgets and devices that define the kind of technology that currently responds to
our needs and lifestyle.

1. ANDROID PHONES
2. BLACKBERRY
3. IPHONE
4. IPAD AND TABLET
5. PERSONAL DIGITAL ASSISSTANT

TECHNOLOGY

1. COMPUTER GENERATED IMAGERY

CGI most commonly refers to the 3D computer graphics used to create characters, scenes and special
effects in films, televisions and games. The technology is also used in everything from advertising,
architecture, engineering, virtual reality and even art. CGI is used extensively these days because it is
often cheaper than physical methods while rely on creating elaborate miniatures hiring extras for crowd
scenes and most commonly for when it’s simply not safe or humanly possible to create the visuals. CGI
is created using a range of different methods. The use of algorithms can produce complex fractal
patterns.2D pixel based image editors can create vector shapes. 3D graphics software can create
everything for simple primitive shapes to complex forms made from flat triangles and quadrangles. 3D
software can even simulate the way light reacts to a surface and generate particle effects. It can also
restore old or classics films.

2. HOLOGRAM
A hologram is an ideal educational tool since it allows the viewer to see the image different perspective.
It can also be used as a perfect model in studying human anatomy and astronomy since it can create a
simulation of an actual environment.

3D ENVIRONMENT

3D interactive environment are often referred to as virtual reality or interactive 3D and have figurative
appearance. Much like our own world, this type of world allows interaction with other beings as well as
manipulation of objects. They are kind of virtual habitat.

1. 3-D FILM
3D films are motion pictures made to give an illusion of three-dimensional solidity, usually with the help
of special viewing devices. A 3D movie could provide different experience for the viewers as it will
enhance their illusion of depth perception.
2. 3-D PRINTER
Hideo Kodama from the Nagoya Municipal Industrial Research Institute, invented two additive
manufacturing fabricating methods of a three dimensional plastic model that has a photo-hardening
polymer. Kodama’s invention gave birth to 3-D printing as it allowed the UV exposure area to produce a
masked pattern through scanning fiber transmitter. Through the computer, the object’s shape can be
controlled and turned into almost any shape. below are the examples of 3D Printing Technology.
• Dot Matrix Printer is can be considered as a pioneer when it comes to creating a hard copy
version of a document. The dot matrix printer also prints relatively slow as compared to a laser
printer. It operates noisily, too, because of the continuous striking of its print head.
• Laser Printer-On the other hand, is a way faster and prints in silence. It uses the photocopier
technology of transferring image through a paper by scanning it.
• Inkjet Printer is actually even more expensive than the laser printer because its ink can easily
dry and has to be replaced frequently.

The emergence of enhanced printers greatly helped the print media since they will be able to create better
looking books, magazines and newspapers and produce more copies in a much faster way.

OTHER DEVICES AND EQUIPMENTS

1. CAMERA
A camera is a device used to capture images using a lens and a shutter, which allows light to pass
through so they can be translated into electrical impulses.
2. PROJECTORS
It is similar with an OHP as it can project and display images and text on a screen or flat surface. LCD
projector can also project better images since its light is much brighter. It can even show videos, unlike
OHP which is only capable of projecting images.
2 Types of Projector
• Overhead Projector (OHP)
• Liquid Crystal Display
Both OHP and LCD projector are effective learning tools for students and lecturers because they can
flash key notes on the screen while keeping up with the pace of the discussion.
3. PHOTOPIER
People should use the photocopier responsible by using it to duplicate important documents and not for
circulating dishonest information. Also reproduction of printed materials, such as textbooks or
laboratory manuals for commercial use is a violation of the copy right law.

OBIQUITOUS LEARNING

Most progressive or non-traditional schools practice this type of learning as this aligned with their
academic program such as focusing on the development of the child’s multiple intelligences. Because
educators are already used traditional set up in teaching, some of them are hesitant to apply this media
instruction. However, those who practice a more progressive approach in teaching find online learning a good
alternative for economic reasons.
WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY-PHILIPPINES

This type also promotes resourcefulness and time management on the progress of the students in answering
or accomplishing the required modules.

MASSIVE OPEN ONLINE CONTENT (MOOC)

The MOOC promotes independent learning, where the students study the materials through their own
pace, but with the supervisions of teaching assistant which can be contracted online to guide them
when necessary.

New technology is innovated and invented as a response to the growing needs of the people to live
conveniently and comfortably. The future of technology in response to media and information is very promising.
At present, gadgets and devices have variety of uses. Aside from using them to communicate with others and
access information they are also used for seeking entertainment, assisting medical practitioners in diagnosing
patients ad guiding police enforces in finding missing persons. The essence of technology is not something we
make; it is a mode of being or of revealing. This means that technological things have their own novel kind of
presence, endurance and connections among parts and wholes. They have their own way of presenting
themselves and the world in which they operate.

LET’S PONDER: In a Yellow Pad paper answer each question briefly based on your objective insight and
critical thinking.

1. How would you feel if your friends have the latest iPhones while you still use an old but still functional
old cell phone model?
2. If you are a teacher, would you agree if students were allowed to bring their latest gadgets to school so
they can use them during break time? Why or Why not?
3. Would you buy an imitation of the latest gadget because it is cheapest? Why or Why not?
