3. Solve the following, showing full setting out.


a) In a multiple-choice exam, students are awarded three marks for a correct answer and
-1.5 marks for an incorrect answer. If the test consists of 40 questions, what would the
overall mark be for a student who answers every question and gets 28 correct? What
would be the overall mark if the student answered 28 questions correctly, 8 incorrectly
and did not answer the remaining 4? There is no penalty if the student did not answer
the question.
b) A boy is walking against a strong wind. For every three steps he takes, the wind
pushes him back the equivalent of two steps. How far will he have actually gone
after taking 90 steps?
4. Find the negative sign and the minus operator on your calculator. Check your answers to
question one with your calculator. Does your calculator put the negative sign high on the
number?
