DURVINIL® SLEEVED GROUTING PIPES

SIREG INJECTION SYSTEMS FOR GROUND

IMPROVEMENT AND WATERPROOFING
INJECTION WITH DURVINIL® SLEEVED GROUTING PIPES
Until a few years ago, the application field of grout injections was limited only to very permeable soils made of
gravel and sand or fissured rocks. Nowadays, the use of sleeved grouting pipes (TAMs) combined with suitable
grouting mixtures allows to widen the kind of soils to be treated, making possible to improve their mechanical
and permeable characteristics. The repetitive selective injection (IRS) technique is a proven solution, minimally
invasive, and economically viable, that enables the reduction of the subsidence in urban areas, thus avoiding
the occurrence of problems during excavation and underground works. The pre-treatment of the soil minimizes
the risk related to public safety and potential damage to existing buildings. The risk of unexpected costs is
therefore reduced.
Sireg has over 30 years of experience manufacturing and supplying grouting pipes for important projects around
the world.
THE TECHNOLOGY
The mechanical characteristics and permeability of
porous soils and fissured rocks can be improved by
injecting appropriate grout mixtures.
Presently a wide variety of soils can be treated
thanks to new injection techniques and mixtures. Even
low permeablity ground can be consolidated with
hydrofracture grouting in such a manner that the soil
is crossed by a network of cement veins and lenses.
The traditional grouting technology, through the same
drill rod (open-hole up or down stage), has been
replaced by the use of Sireg Durvinil® sleeved port
pipe (SPP).

DURVINIL® SLEEVED GROUTING PIPES

Durvinil® sleeved grouting pipes are perforated non
metallic tubes with rubber sleeves mounted on the
holes to prevent the flow-back of the mixtures inside
the pipe.

ADVANTAGES OF GROUTING WITH DURVINIL®

GROUTING PIPES:
• The injections can be repeated many times through
the same pipes
• Mixtures can be changed over time and through
the various sleeves
• Injection volumes and pressure are constantly
controlled during the different stages of the work
• The sleeved pipes can be used in confined working
spaces or with limited working height
• The treatment can be executed even nearby
highly sensitive structures due to the vibration-free
procedure

GROUTING TECHNOLOGIES
The following soil grouting processes are possible with Sireg Tubes a Manchette:

• Permeation grouting
• Compaction grouting
• Hydrofracturing
• Rock grouting
• Biosealing

Permeation Grouting: the core principle of permeation is to fill the voids naturally present in the soil with grout,
while maintaining the ground’s original structure and volumetry. This is probably the oldest grouting technique
used to reduce settlement and modify the ground’s permeability.

Compaction Grouting: high cohesion and rigidity grouts, often containing different granulometries of aggregates
are injected to form bulbs around the injection pipe, inducing densification of the surrounding soil. Compaction
grouting is not typically used for excavation support; however, compensation grouting, a variant of this grouting
concept, is increasingly used for controlling tunneling induced settlement, cavity grouting and rehabilitation of
foundations.

Hydrofracturing: process of controlled fracturing and grouting by means Durvinil® TAM pipes installed in the
soil layer to be treated. This typically French grouting method aims at injecting grout in the ground at relatively
high pressure, thus fracturing the ground itself and creating lenses of grout, mainly along horizontal planes. This
method is usually applied in foundation restoration and protection of structures against settlements.

Rock grouting: injection of a cement grout suspension to seal cracks within a rock mass without creating
new or opening existing fractures. The purpose of the injection is to reduce the permeability and increase the
stiffness of the grouted mass. The use of sleeved grouting pipes with Sireg obturator bags allows for the correct
execution of this technique.

Biosealing: biological nutrients are injected into the soil near a suspected leak, stimulating the growth of soil
bacteria. This drastically reduces the soil permeability, gradually sealing the leak. Sireg patented Durvinil® Bio-
system to achieve this goal.

THE GROUTS
Several types of grouts can be injected through Sireg Durvinil® grouting pipes:
• Liquid grouts: their penetration properties are a function of their viscosity, and how it changes over time.
• Suspension grouts: suspensions are suitable for optimum consolidation and waterproofing treatments
thanks to the combination of viscosity, rigidity and cohesion properties. The voids or pores that can be
sealed with these grouts depend on the size of the grains in suspension. Broadly, it is considered that the
minimum void size to suspension’s grain size ratio should be three. The suspension’s stability (decantation,
pressure, filtration) is an important grouting parameter. A stable suspension improves its hydraulic behavior
and reduces the bleeding effect.
• Mortar grouts: mortars have high rigidity and are used for filling large voids and cavities or for grouting
where soil displacement is the objective.

Additionally, non toxic grouting mixtures have been developed to avoid any danger of ground water pollution.
Sireg Geotech technical team will support your company to find the most suitable mixture for your application.

HOW TO USE SIREG DURVINIL® TAM PIPES:
A drilling rig is used to create the perforations where the
pipe will be inserted.

The perforated Durvinil® pipe is placed and sealed into

the hole by means of a suitable cement mixture (sheath).
The cement sheath ensures that the sleeved pipe stays
in place over time and prevents the injected mixture from
returning along the walls of the borehole.

Once the sheath has hardened, pressure injection is

carried out through a single valve with a double packer
(rigid ring type or hydraulic with expansion joint). The
injected mixture opens the valve and splits the sheath,
spreading into the surrounding soil.

After grouting, the Dur-O-Ring® valve closes perfectly,

preventing the injected material from returning into the
pipe. Once the pipe has been washed inside, the valves
are ready to be used for other grouting operations.

Note that successful repetitive injections can be carried

out only when using the pipes with raised sleeves and
special Dur-O-Ring rubber valves. Other valves usually
used on metallic pipes do not allow for repeated injections.

5
The use of Durvinil® sleeved grouting pipes allows
for injecting mixtures at a specified depth, based on
established injection parameters (pressure, flow, etc.),
and is easily monitored through analogic or digital
systems.

Digital Datalogger

The mixture injections are realized using a double

packer inside the TAM pipe at a depth corresponding
to each valve. The mix, pumped with high pressure,
opens the valve exiting the pipe and permeating the
surrounding soil.
The plastic mortar sheath surrounding the pipe,
keeps it in the right position and prevents the mixture
from coming up along the hole’s wall.

GROUTING APPLICATIONS
Durvinil® grouting pipes can be used in many construction fields, for
instance:
• Tunnel construction
• Stabilization of the excavation front by coupling injection sleeved
pipes with fiberglass elements
• Reinforcement of soil foundations
• Ground anchors
• Large excavations and earthworks
• Dam construction
• Rock curtain (MPSP technique)
• Biosealing

TUNNEL CONSTRUCTION
The injection technique is widely used in tunneling in order to improve Consolidation from a pilot tunnel
the ground’s mechanical characteristics and to reduce its permeability.
Many treatment schemes can be adopted for this purpose using
Durvinil® pipes:
• forepoling treatment ahead from face excavation (so called
“umbrella”)
• vertical holes from the surface, when the tunnel is not too deep
and the areas above the excavation are available for works
• from a side tunnel in case of two tunnels alongside
• treatment from a pilot tunnel
• waterproofing treatment for tunneling under the groundwater table
• pipes executed from shaft even under the groundwater table with

REINFORCEMENT OF SOIL FOUNDATIONS
Excavations carried out near existing foundations
for new buildings, the construction of underground
tunnels or the creation of new underground spaces
which could affect surface foundations, and increased
foundation loads caused by the refurbishment of
old buildings are all causes which may require soil
consolidation.
Injections are one of the most versatile technologies
for solving this kind of problem.

GROUND ANCHORS
In the execution of ground anchors it is possible to
use the grouting technology for injecting the mixtures
in subsequent phases in order to obtain a perfect
ground anchorage in any type of soil including in
fissured or clayey soil.

LARGE EXCAVATIONS AND EARTHWORKS
Grouting is generally used to waterproof the terrain during open pit
excavation. The injections are used for soil consolidation to support other
retaining structures (concrete diaphragms, sheet piles etc.).
Recently, injections with cement grout have been used as pre-treatment in
connection with ground freezing works.

DAM CONSTRUCTION
Grouting has been traditionally applied to create impermeable curtains
under foundations or abutments in correspondence of large dams in
order to reduce the piping effect under the structure.

ROCK CURTAIN (MPSP TECHNIQUE)
The use of sleeved grouting pipes with obturator bags
allows for a correct execution of the Multiple Packer
Sleeved Pipe (MPSP) technique. Instead of performing
an open-hole injection, the sleeved grouting pipes are
fitted with obturator bags on some of the sleeves. Once
filled with grout, the obturator bags split the borehole
in sections while the injection is carried out through the
remaining sleeves. The bags prevent the mixtures from
moving among the different sections.
The injection using the MPSP technique could be
performed with the Grout Intensity Number (GIN)
method proposed by Prof. Lombardi. GIN is becoming
increasingly widespread particularly since the process
GIN method scheme
has become computer-controlled. This method balances
the pressure and quantity parameters needed to
obtain local radius of action that are virtually the same,
regardless of the degree and extent of fissuring.
