City Of Doraville
WHEREAS, locally elected municipal officials are tasked with appropriating funds for a variety
of municipal services, such as parks and recreation, public safety and public works, among others;
and
WHEREAS, locally elected municipal officials are responsible for ensuring such appropriations
are reflective of their communities’ goals and are part of an annually balanced budget; and
WHEREAS, House Bill 286 is legislation that would undermine municipal governments’
authority to establish such goals and budget with the necessary flexibility for public safety, a
crucial municipal service; and
WHEREAS, municipal government leaders are opposed to this infringement on home rule powers
and oppose any legislation by the General Assembly aimed at dictating levels of appropriations of
any municipal services; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE Mayor and City Council of the City of
Doraville, Georgia, that this governing body voices its opposition to House Bill 286, Prohibition
of Police Department Budget Cuts.

City Of Doraville
WHEREAS, Doraville’s Police Department is one of the oldest departments in Dekalb County
and widely recognized as one of the best in the State of Georgia; and
WHEREAS, Doraville has a lower crime rate than neighboring jurisdictions, thanks to the hard
work of the Doraville Police Department; and
WHEREAS, the City of Doraville’s Police Department response times are consistently better than
those of its neighboring jurisdictions; and
WHEREAS, Doraville City Council has made recent investments in the Doraville Police
Department, including approval of three new vehicles this fiscal year; and
WHEREAS, Doraville City Council has been committed to preserving Police Department Jobs –
even making sure there were lateral positions for employees to move to when the city’s jail was
closed at the end of 2020; and
WHEREAS, when Doraville City Council needed to appoint a police chief, they chose long-time
Doraville Police Department employee, Chuck Atkinson – a sign in their confidence in the
department’s direction;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE Mayor and City Council of the City of
Doraville, Georgia, that this governing body strongly supports the Doraville Police Department
and the men and women who work for it.
