There are four properties involving multiplication that will help make problems easier to
solve. The properties are the commutative, associative, multiplicative identity and
distributive.

1. Discuss the basic properties of multiplication and how would you as a


mathematics teacher relate these in the real-life situation?
2. Do you think these properties should be introduced in Year 2 pupils? Discuss.
3. Suggest one activity for the teaching of multiplication to primary mathematics
pupils. Choose one of the properties and propose your own effective
teaching strategies.

Support your discussion with relevant articles or suitable resources.
