Phase Changes Homework Worksheet

Directions: Apply the concepts learned and discussed to answer or complete the following.

1. Compare and contrast evaporation and boiling.

Evaporation is slower and only happens on the top of the water, boiling is faster and has bubbles.

2. Which two of the following involve the same energy transfer? Assume that the same substance and
the same mass is involved in all four processes.
a. Melting
b. Evaporation
c. Sublimation
d. Condensation

3. Describe the energy transfers that occur when ice melts and water vapor condense to form liquid
water. Be sure to include how the attraction between water molecules is affected.
As energy is transferred to ice, the attraction between molecules is broken and then the ice melts. As
water vapor releases energy attraction between molecules increases, and liquid water condenses.

4. What is sublimation? What must molecules at the surface of a solid overcome to sublimate?
When solid changes directly to a gas. When the molecules absorb enough energy to overcome the
force of attraction between them.

5. Label the phase change diagram below based on your knowledge of the concepts discussed and
describe the heat movement during the labeled phase change (i.e. absorption or release of thermal
energy).

Heat energy goes up and so does temperature, so because of that the form of the molecules change.
