Question 1: Identify the management, organization, and technology factors responsible for impeding adoption of
internal corporate social networks.
* Management:
Incentive for adoption: Employees in a traditional working environment will want incentive to use anything new,
including internal social tools. However, many companies don’t provide incentive to encourage them to adopt new
technology. In fact, there are only 22 percent of the users of the social software believe the technology is useful and
necessary to their job.
* Organization:
Working patterns: Because there are employees who are used to do business in a certain way. Therefore, forcing them
to use a new technology can make the adoption of social tools difficult. In fact, about 50% of survey respondent said
that internal social networks had a “very little impact” on employee’s retention, the speed of making decision or the
reduction of meetings.
* Technology:
Design of the software: The software needs to be designed to increase work efficiency and easy to use, if not, then it
will impede employees from using them. Using social networking for personal life is different from work. Also, the
content on the networks must be relevant, up-to-date and easy to access. Users prefer to use the network that is more
user-friendly rather than difficult to reach.
Question 2: Compare the experiences for implementing internal social networks of the two organizations. Why was one
more successful than the other? What role did management play in this process?
NASA's Goddard Space Flight Centre: They failed to implement an internal social network called Spacebook. The
project was failed because it was not based enough on individuals and the network was not taking the philosophy and
politics of the company into account. The staff do not know and do not understand how the network can allow them to
do their jobs. The management play the role of allowing the project to be implemented but they neglect about how the
project should be built.
Red Robin: They succeeded in introducing their inner social network. It is successful because it addressed the
information flow problem between front-line employees, clients that working directly with front-line employees and
high-level managers. The management play the role of getting information directly from employees.
Question 3: Should all companies implement internal enterprise social networks? Why or why not?
No, I don’t think so. Firstly, because different companies have different business models and operations, therefore, the
flow of information for certain types of business don’t have to use internal social networks. Second, usually information
flows of small-scale businesses are not as complicated as that of large-scale companies. Therefore, such implementation
cannot create enough work efficiency compared to the money invested to possess that technology.
