CLIMATE CHANGE AND DISASTER RISK AND MANAGEMENT

5. TEACHING AND LEARNING ACTIVITIES

Activity 1: Weather Data Log.

For a week, record the weather forecast including each day temperature in your area through
media or news. Record and compare the temperature and weather forecast to the actual weather
each day and answer the following questions below.

Day and Mon: Tue: Wed: Thu: Fri: Sat: Sun:

Forecast Partly Partly Partly Scattered Showers Thunder- Thunder-
Weather Cloudy Cloudy Cloudy Showers storm storm

Forecast 21° 21° 21° 21° 21° 22° 22°

1. What are your observations between forecast weather and temperature

to the actual weather and temperature?

a. Observation 1: I noticed that the weather is very dynamic.

b. Observation 2: The weather and temperature is kinda unpredictable.
c. Observation 3: Sometimes the weather forecast is not very accurate.
2. What is the importance of weather forecasting?
Weather forecasting is very important and critical to our day to day lives as it mostly affects the
tasks that we will be doing and how we will be doing it. Weather forecasting is also important to
farmers as they use this to plan and prepare properly so that their crops will not be affected by
harsh weathers. Businessmen also use the weather forecast as basis if the demands for their
various products will be affected.

Activity 2: Answer the questions below.

1. Describe some ways on how weather and climate can influence people’s
lives.

2. Convert the following temperature. Show your solution.

a. 37.5°C
F= (37.5 x 9/5) + 32
F = (337.5 / 5) + 32
F = 67.5 + 32
= 99.5 f

b. 78 F
°C = (78 – 32) X 5/9
°C = 46 x 5/9
°C = 230 / 9
=25.5°C

3. Identify the climate type of each country based on their location.

a. Philippines: Tropical Climate
b. Japan: Temperate Climate
c. Australia: Northern part: Tropical Climate
Southern part: Temperate Climate
d. South Africa: Temperate Climate
e. Iceland: Temperate Climate
8. ASSESSMENT TASK
Before answering the following questions, you have to first watch the YouTube video entitled,
ESS2D – Weather and Climate by Bozeman Science, at the given link
below:

A. Short-response/Essay writing: Limit your answer in 2 to 3 sentences.

1) What are the similarities between weather and climate?

Both weather and climate have the same elements like temperature, atmospheric pressure,
humidity, wind and precipitation. Both weather and climate also indicate the atmospheric
condition of a particular region.
The climate suggests the condition of the air in a short time period, whereas the climate signifies
ordinary weather of a particular area over a span of several decades. The weather may change in
a couple of minutes, while the weather can take a long time to alter. Weather is analyzed from
the meteorologists.

2) What causes change in weather and climate?

Natural causes of climate change as we all know that the earth has gone through warm and cool
phases in the past, and long before humans were around. Forces that contribute to climate change
include the sun's intensity, volcanic eruptions, and changes in naturally occurring greenhouse gas
concentrations.

B. Write an essay with at least 10 to 15 sentences about how different factors affects and causes
change in the weather and climate of the Earth.

There are many different factors around the world which affects and causes the change in the weather
and climate of the earth. It is these factors' varying impact that contributes to different areas of the
Planet experiencing various climates. Human factors that matter most are the distance from the sea or
the ocean currents that could also be related to the direction of prevailing winds. The shape of the land
is also a factor or even an areas distance from the equator. Even the El Niño phenomenon is a factor
that affects climate change.

Other factors could be the altitude of the place, because it influences the climate and the higher the
altitude, the colder it is. Then the Moisture and humidity which can change or influence the climate in
many ways.

The change in climate is mainly caused by global warming due to increasing concentrations of
greenhouse gases in our atmosphere. It is a significant change in earth’s overall conditions, which can be
measured by major changes in the distribution of weather patterns, such as temperature or
precipitation, among other effects that occur over several decades or longer.
