Replacement/ Supplement of Fish Meal by Sargassum Sp. and Its Effect
Replacement/ Supplement of Fish Meal by Sargassum Sp. and Its Effect
Introduction:
The aquaculture sector has expanded rapidly in recent year to maintain fish supply, especially
given the decline in the capture fish industry due to unsustainable practices. Under intensive and
semi-intensive aquaculture regimens, feed constitutes the largest proportion of the overall costs,
often ranging from 30% to 60% of the total variable expenses, depending on the intensity of the
culture operation. Protein is the most important component in aquaculture feed and for this fish
meal is the most expensive ingredient. For getting maximum nutrient value in minimum expense
feed replacement is must. Feed replacement is very much important for making balance diet.
Replacement/ Supplement of Fish meal by Sargassum sp. have good impact in fish health.
Sargassum is a brown algae which has antibacterial and antioxidant properties. It increase fish
growth. Supplement of Fish meal by Sargassum sp. have positive impact in fish culture. Because
it has good nutritive value.
Sargassum:
Sargassum is a known as brown macro algae which are found in the tropical oceans of the world.
They are also called planktonic (free-floating species) which inhabits coral reefs and shallow
water and are the genus of brown algae of sargassaceae family. These are small in size and have
leaf-like toothed edges. Some of its species are reproduced sexually and pelagic species are
reproducing by fragmentation. The term Sargassum was initiated by Portuguese sailors who
found it in the Sargasso Sea. They are brown genus which may grow to a length of meters.
Amino acids:
Sargassum also contains amino acids which have a high range of proteins. All essential
amino acids like arginine, leucine, valine, tryptophan, lysine, etc.
Vitamins:
Sargassum is enriched with vitamins. Different vitamins A, B, C, D, E, and K help in
different ways. It may help in maintaining healthy bones, tissues, eye health, and healthy
skin.

in Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus (g kg-1)
Table 3:
Apparent digestibility coefficients (ADC) of dry matter of the reference, test diets and test
ingredient (dried Sargassum meal)
Own observation:
The proximate composition of the Sargassum meal contained less than 7% water and crude lipid
content was low at 0.41%. Crude protein was low to be considered as protein supplement but
because of its high carbohydrate content, it could be an energy supplement to the diet of the Nile
tilapia. Crude fiber content was minimal but its high ash content was at a level observable in
other macro algae. Adding 30% Sargassum meal to the reference diet decreased ADC for dry
matter, crude protein and crude lipid by small percentages albeit significant. Ingredient ADC of
the Sargassum meal for dry matter was relatively high at 63.9%, quite high for both crude
protein and lipid. Proximate composition and values of apparent digestibility coefficients for
nutrients showed that the Sargassum meal had potential to be an ingredient in the diet of the Nile
tilapia.
