Out of 50 items of SILL questionnaire, 30 items are selected as instruments for assessing the

language learning strategies used by the learners in improving their speaking skills.

In this research, the survey questionnaire is based on the Strategies Inventory for

Language Learning (SILL) version 7.0 by Oxford (1989) that is specialized for foreign

language learners to examine the language learning strategies applied. Out of 50 items of

SILL questionnaire, 30 items are selected as instruments for assessing the language learning

strategies used by the learners in improving their speaking skills. The questionnaire items

will be translated into Bahasa Indonesia or Indonesia language in order to facilitate the

samples of this research to comprehend the questions better.

Likert Scale use to get the information from the participants, Likert scale is to measure

the extent of subjects’ agreement with each item. The extent is measured on a five point

scale: never or almost never true, usually not true, somewhat true, usually true, and always

or almost always. The overall average indicated how often the leaner tended to use the

learning strategies in general, while averages for each part of the SILL indicated which

strategy group(s) the learner tended to use most frequently.

a. SILL questionnaire was used by many researches to investigate their studies. It is

followed by two revised versions published in an appendix to Oxford’s learning strategy

book for language teachers. Version 7.0 (ESL/EFL) for learners of English as a

second/foreign language (50 items). Based on Oxford’s classification of language

learning strategies, learners with a mean of 2.5 and under are identified as low strategy

users, while those with a mean of 2.5 to 3.5 are identified as moderate strategy users, and

the mean for high users is more than 3.5.

This questionnaire use a 5-point Likert Scale adapted from Likert Scale format 5 original

points from Oxford’s Strategies Inventory for Language Learning (SILL) version 7.0, such as

never or almost never true, usually not true, somewhat true, usually true, and always or

almost always. The overall average indicated how often the leaner tended to use the learning

strategies in general, while averages for each part of the SILL indicated which strategy

group(s) the learner tended to use most frequently. The classification can be seen below:

Based on the research questions above, this particular study aim at finding out:

1. To find out the learning the strategies used by Business Administration

Department students to improve their speaking skill.

2. To find out the reasons that causes the students to choose that learning strategy.
