Agency Assessment:
Danville-Pittsylvania Community Services
 

1. Describe the agency: What is the agency’s mission, programs, and population
served?

The mission of Danville-Pittsylvania County Community Services is to provide the highest


quality of mental health, developmental, substance abuse, and prevention services and
supports to the citizens of the City of Danville and Pittsylvania County. These services and
supports are focused upon unlocking everyone’s potential for self-determination,
empowerment, recovery, resiliency and health, and the highest possible level of participation
in all aspects of community life.

They have a vision to create, maintain, and continually enhance a quality behavioral health
care continuum of services that is responsive to the needs of the men, women, and children in
our geographic area who are at-risk or who have a mental illness, an intellectual disability,
and/or a substance use disorder.

Danville-Pittsylvania County Community Services serves anyone in the community that is


need. There is a large drug population in Danville and Pittsylvania County. They offer
rehabilitation services to assist them in living a drug free life. The also assist people in need
of mental and behavioral health care. Danville-Pittsylvania County Community Services will
assist in providing mental and behavioral health during crisis and long-term maintenance.

There are also programs that aid woman and children that need assistance form Danville-
Pittsylvania County Community Services.

2. How does the work of the agency contribute to the health of the community?

The Behavioral Health Services Division is dedicated to delivering quality mental health
and substance use care through a variety of programs and services aimed at empowering
the individual to improve their quality of life.  It is the mission of the Behavioral Health
Services Division to provide comprehensive diagnostics, treatment, prevention, and
community education services to the individuals of the catchment area.
 
The orientation of the Behavioral Health Services Division is to utilize its resources in
ways that are responsive to a variety of community behavioral health needs and to allow
for a wide provision of services to individuals across the life span.  Individuals are
assisted with accessing services which are outside the scope of the Behavioral Health
Services Division.
 
The Behavioral Health Services Division provides a continuum of services from short-
term therapy, child and adolescent therapy which includes 24-hour emergency crisis
intervention services, psychiatric evaluation and medication treatment, through case
management, psychosocial rehabilitation, as well as housing and employment assistance
for individuals diagnosed with a mental illness, substance use disorder, or a co-
occurrence of disorders.  This well organized, highly integrated delivery system serves to
maximize continuity of care to its individuals.  Services provided are based on the belief
that treatment is individual driven and implemented in the least restrictive manner
available.  All behavioral health services offered adhere to professionally accepted
standards and practices and are continuously monitored by the Behavioral Health
Services Division's quality assurance procedures.

The Developmental Services Division provides a services system that assists citizens of
Danville and Pittsylvania County with developmental disability in having the same
opportunities and choices as other members of the community in the following areas
To have a home
To learn skills which are useful to their lives and careers
To work
To develop and sustain relationships with people who depend on them and upon whom
they can depend

Danville-Pittsylvania Community Services’ Prevention Services Division provides


programs to promote behavioral health wellness through a comprehensive array of
strategies proven to reduce substance abuse and promote mental health. Substance abuse
and mental illness share some common risk and protective factors. As a result of reducing
risk factors and increasing protective factors for substance abuse, not only will substance
abuse prevalence consumption and related consequences be reduced, but prevention of
mental illness may be impacted as well.  In addition to the Federal, State and local
dollars, Prevention Services Division relies heavily on grants, contracts, fees and other
contributions in order to provide programs at no cost.

Compliance & Information Systems provides support with Quality


Assurance/Improvement, Information Technology, Training and Corporate Compliance. 
Our staff are responsible for the establishment, coordination, and oversight of the
Agency's Quality and Compliance Programs, Training and Health Information
Technology.

3. How is the agency funded?


Danville-Pittsylvania County Community Services is funded through federal, state and
local governments.
4. How is the agency situated in the network of health/healthcare institutions in the
community - What is the spectrum of services?

Patients are referred to this agency usually from the hospital, social services or police
department

5. What is the role of the nurse within the agency?

Patient assessment to see what services are needed. Preform daily assessments to patients
that are in outpatient drug treatment programs. Administer daily medications to the patients
that are in the drug treatment programs. Preform assessments to the patients that come in to
see the doctors usually for psychiatric visits.

6. How is cultural competency addressed/ how can it be addressed? See Stanhope and


Lancaster, Chapter 5.

Cultural Competence is the interplay of factors that motivates a person to develop


knowledge, skill, and ability to care for others.

Danville-Pittsylvania County Community Services has a culturally diverse staff. They do


annual training to ensure that the staff is culturally competent.
