Summarize one (1) learning source in 03 Readings: The Cavite Mutiny

Filipino Perspective of Cavite Mutiny

General Izquierdo’s arrival as a new governor made a vital change. His rule was completely different
from that of La Torre. First, he stopped the founding of school of arts and trades saying that it is not par
with religious orders. All of those who support ex-Governor La Torre are considered personas
suspechosas (suspects) who refuses or disobey authorities. The peace of the colony started to be broken
when due to political agitation. Gen. Izquierdo abolished the privileges of the workmen in the arsenal in
Cavite. This leads to revolt on January 20, 1872. About 200 Filipinos (laborers, soldiers, and residents) in
Cavite rose in mutiny lead by Sgt. Lamadrid. When the mutiny reached Gen. Izquierdo, the assigned
Governor General after Gen. de la Torre, he immediately ordered reinforcement which killed the
rebellion in two days. The rebels were executed, imprisoned, or forced to labor. The mutiny in Cavite
were used by the Spanish residents and friars as a lever. The Central Government in Madrid intended to
deprive the friars the power to intervene in civil government matters as well as in direction and
management of education. Moret, conspired reforms in the colony aiming to make radical change.
Because of this the Filipinos hoped for the better, while the friars feared that their power in the colony
will soon be over. This, pushed them to do something drastic to maintain the power in the Philippines.
Many of the best known Filipinos were condemned to the military authorities, also including Spaniards
born in the Islands, mixed bloods, Indians, were persecuted without distinction. Among others, the
GOMBURZA, who had strongly opposed, were publicly executed by garotte.

real facts or extent of the alleged revolution but had been biased to Gen. Izquierdo and friars’

and management of education.

which led them to take action in redeeming freedom.

3. What viewpoint do you believe in that resource? Explain why you believe in this particular viewpoint.
The arrival of Gen. Izquierdo, his strict and abusive command, and the injustices after the Cavite mutiny
escalated the Filipinos disgust in Spanish government which led them to take action in redeeming
freedom. I believe in this particular viewpoint because from the resources, before the administration of
Gen. Izquierdo, there was actually a good relationship between Spanish-filipinos made possible by
Governor General La Torre. It was when the Filipinos privileges were abused that they started to act
against the Spanish colony. In the beginning, Filipinos believed the scheme or conspiracy made by the
Spanish government in making the education system better or something. But the continuous injustice
proved otherwise. The execution of GOMBURZA among other else awakened the Filipinos to fight for
their freedom.
