Count to 100 by ones and by tens. count on from any given number.
CCCSTM.K.CC2

how to skip count by 5s and 10s.
 MULTIPLE INTELLIGENCE ADDRESSED

activity
Verbal/Linguistic: answering questions and making
observations

correspondence and skip count by 5s and 10s
Bodily/Kinesthetic: getting up and switch partners, can
stand while counting out candy, dancing to exercise skip
counting videos
Musical: singing to exercise skip counting videos

ASSESSMENT
STRATEGY FOR ASSESSMENT
-Information assessment of asking them questions as we go along.
-Formal assessment with two worksheets to see how well they are able to complete them after the lesson.

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT
STRATEGIES TO MEET DIVERSIFIED LEARNERS
For students that struggle with counting I will pair them up with a peer partner that can help them. I will use the
100-chart to help students have a different way to visualize what the candy represents.

STEPS THROUGH THE LESSON

INTO RATIONALE
-When students walk in, they will see their desk in pairs. -Before beginning the math lesson where we will use

how the experiment works and different ways they could
do their M&Ms. Once each pair completes how they
want their M&Ms on the plate I will pour water with a
small pitcher and let them watch.

THROUGH RATIONALE
-As a group we will count to 10. Then I will have students -I want the kids to switch partners to learn how to work

them count their piles. They will transfer the M&Ms to
Candy Jar document (see below). On the whiteboard I
will draw 10 colored circles in each jar to represent what
they have on their papers with the candy. “Does anyone
know how many M&Ms we have all together? How could
we count them?” I will point their attention to the 100-
chart poster. I will point their attention to the right side
in the 10s column. We will count out loud as a class. We
will discuss how if each candy jar is just like one row on
our poster. Then we will count by 10s in the candy jar.
-“If I took the same M&Ms that you have now and broke
them down into group of 5, instead of 10, what would
happen? Would I have more or less M&Ms?”
-We would then repeat the activity without the candy jar
paper, and we would count by 5s to see that our total
number didn’t change.

BEYOND RATIONALE
