What is the peer pressure?

► Peer pressure is the direct influence on people by peers, or the

effect on an individual who gets encouraged to follow
their peers by changing their attitudes, values or behaviors to
conform to those of the influencing group or individual. This can
result in either a positive or negative effect, or both.
► Peer pressure can affect individuals of all ethnicity, genders
and ages, however. Peer pressure has moved from strictly face
to face interaction to digital interaction as well.
What is the effect of peer pressure to
adolescent?

► Peer pressure influence can be positive or negative.

► Peer pressure and influence can be positive. For example,
adolescent might be influenced to become more assertive, try
new activities, or to get more involved with school.
► It can be negative too. Some teenagers might choose to try
things they normally wouldn’t be interested in, like smoking or
behaving in antisocial ways.
4 types of Peer Pressure

► Spoken Peer Pressure - Spoken peer pressure is when a teenager asks,

suggests, persuades or otherwise directs another to engage in a specific
behavior.
► Unspoken Peer Pressure – With unspoken peer pressure, a teenager is
exposed to the actions of one or more peers and is left to choose whether
they want to follow along.
► Direct Peer Pressure - This type of peer pressure can be spoken or
unspoken. Direct peer pressure is normally behavior-centric.
► Indirect Peer Pressure - Similar to unspoken peer pressure, indirect peer
pressure is subtle but can still exert a strong influence on an
impressionable young person.
