NUMERACY
1. Lesson 1

2. Topic: Computation

3. Sub-topic/s:

➢ Operations with Decimals

4. Rationale:
This lesson will provide you with the basic understanding of operations with decimals. It is
important that you work with decimals because you will learn different strategies on how to use
the four-basic arithmetic operations on decimal numbers. Furthermore, as a teacher it is my
service to educate you as a student on operations with decimals because these are parts of
mathematics that you will use in your everyday lives and need to be familiar with. From
purchasing at a store to adding your bill, to barrowing a small loan, it is a need to be able to work
with decimals with ease.

5. Objectives: After reading through handouts based on operations with decimals, you will be
able to:
• Identify and read decimal numbers.
• Set up decimal numbers underneath the correct place value.
• add, subtract, multiply and divide decimals

6. Activities:
• Read the handout on operation with decimal numbers.
• Highlight or underline with a pen, important information in the handout.
• Complete the practice exercise on the handout itself and submit all graded assessments
only.

7. Resources: You will need a pencil, a pen, a calculator.

8. Glossary of important terms:

Decimal number – consists of a whole number and a decimal fraction
2
FORM 1 NUMERACY MODULE 5

Addition is bringing two or more numbers (or things) together to make a new total.

Subtraction is taking one number away from another.

Multiplication is (in its simplest form) repeated addition.

Division is splitting into equal parts or groups. It is the result of "fair sharing".

9. Information Sheet:
Decimal Number = whole number + decimal fraction
For example,
9.8 = 9 + 0.8
84.56 = 84 + 0.56
127.3 = 127 + 0.3
Decimal place values:
First, let's have an example:
decimal number 45.6
Here is the number "forty-five and six-tenths" written as a decimal number:

The decimal point goes between Ones and Tenths.

45.6 has 4 Tens, 5 Ones and 6 Tenths, like this:
6
decimal number 45.6 = 40 + 5 + 10

3
FORM 1 NUMERACY MODULE 5

Another example is shown below.

10. Example/s with answers.

Addition of Decimals: To add decimals, follow these steps:
• Write down the numbers, one under the other, with the decimal points lined up
• Put in zeros so the numbers have the same length
• Then add, using column addition, remembering to put the decimal point in the answer
Example 1: Add 1.452 to 1.3

4
FORM 1 NUMERACY MODULE 5

Example 2: Add 3.25, 0.075 and 5

Subtraction of Decimals: To subtract decimals, follow these steps:

• Write down the two numbers, one under the other, with the decimal points lined up.
• Add zeros so the numbers have the same length
• Then subtract normally, remembering to put the decimal point in the answer

Example 1: Subtract 0.03 from 1.1

Example 2: Subtract 78.9 – 37.43.

5
FORM 1 NUMERACY MODULE 5

Example 3: Subtract 54.26 – 1.1.

Example 4: Subtract 17 – 8.43.

Multiplication of Decimals: How to Multiply Decimals

Just follow these steps:

• Multiply normally, ignoring the decimal points.

• Then put the decimal point in the answer - it will have as many decimal places as the two
original numbers combined.

In other words, just count up how many numbers are after the decimal point in both numbers you
are multiplying, then the answer should have that many numbers after its decimal point.

Example 1: Multiply 40.012 × 3.1.

Example 2: Multiply 0.3 × 2.13.

6
FORM 1 NUMERACY MODULE 5

Example 3: Multiply 27.5 × 1.4.

Dividing Decimals:

The trick is to get rid of the decimal point from the number we are dividing by.

How? We can "shift the decimal point" out of the way by multiplying by 10, as many times as
we need to.

But we must do the same thing to both numbers in the division.

Example 1: Divide 6.4 by 0.4

Let us just shift the decimal point one space for both:

6.4/0.4 is exactly the same as 64/4,

as we moved the decimal point of both numbers.

Now we can calculate:

7
FORM 1 NUMERACY MODULE 5

64 / 4 = 16

So the answer is:

6.4 / 0.4 = 16

Are there really 16 lots of 0.4 in 6.4? Let's see:

Example 2: Divide 0.539 by 0.11

Move the decimal point so the divisor (0.11) is a whole number:

But what about 53.9? It still has a decimal point.

Well, we can ignore the decimal point in the dividend so long as we remember to put it back
later. First we do the calculation without the decimal point:

8
FORM 1 NUMERACY MODULE 5

Now put the decimal point in the answer directly above the decimal point in the dividend:

The answer is 4.9

Example 3: Divide 9.1 by 7

We don't need to shift the decimal point at all, as the divisor (7) is already a whole number.

Ignore the decimal point in the dividend and use Long Division:

Put the decimal point in the answer directly above the decimal point in the dividend:

The answer is 1.3

Spirals

This puzzle gives you two chances to get the right answers! Here’s how. First, solve each
problem and write the answers on the lines provided. Then, to spiral inward, place the numbers
in the boxes indicated beside each problem. The decimal point will occupy a space. To spiral
outward, and to check your answers, put your answers in the boxes indicated but spiral in the
opposite direction. The numbers should match. One answer is given to get you started.
