The flag of Japan


consists of a red sun in
the middle of a white
field.

This flag is called Hinomaru, which means ‘circle of the sun.’

The cherry blossom or sakura are cherry trees
which are a symbol of spring in Japan.

Once a bud opens, there is a lovely display of pale


pink flowers, which finally flutter to the ground,
which is known as sakura fubuki or sukura snow.

Origami is a Japanese art of


paper folding. Origami paper
is specially made origami
paper which is made for
folding and staying in shape.

At first, only one piece of paper was used. Over time, small
pieces of origami have been combined to create one large
model. This is known as modular origami.

Rice has been cultivated in
Japan for thousands of
years. Rice is planted in
spring or early summer
and harvested in fall.

A small bowl of rice is


served with most meals in
Japan.

Sushi is a popular food from Japan. It is made with


specially prepared rice that is mixed with vinegar, salt
and sugar. Sushi contains raw or cooked seafood, and
occasionally, vegetables. It can be wrapped in a sheet
of seaweed called nori.

The Japanese tea ceremony is a special way of making
matcha (green) tea. It is done in a special room or building.

When attending a tea ceremony, people take off their shoes


as they enter the room and sit on a special floor mat called
tatami.

Traditional Japanese houses are


made of wood with at least one
room having a tatami floor.
Tatami mats are mats made of
rice straw that are used as
flooring material.

Upon entering a house in Japan,


shoes are to be taken off to keep
the floor clean.
