PNUEMATIC TEST (LEAK TEST) PROCEDURE

I. INTRODUCTION
The following procedure recommended by IG-541 Inergen Fire Suppression System
developer/manufacturer FIRE EATER, Denmark

This procedure describes a method of leak testing the piping assemblies. It is intended to
reveal leaks at the complete piping assembly. It also prescribed as careful inspection of
all the joints and between fittings. The pneumatic test shall be conducted at work site
after all the discharge piping network works are completed and prior to Site
Acceptance test

The entire test shall be witnessed by Main Contractor and the Company’s representative
for attesting completeness and successful test.

The below procedure is in accordance with FIRE EATER’s recommended procedure and
KOC’s General Standards for Testing.

III. SAFETY CONSIDERATION

The usual Safety Guidelines at workplace has to be observed on handling a pressurized
system, Safety gears like goggles shall be worn at all times during the entire test. Only
duly authorized personnel shall be permitted to approach the system during system
Since the test gas is 100% compressed atmosphere air/Nitrogen, exposure to the gas is not
hazardous to human and has no environmental restrictions.

As precaution:
a) It is to ensure that no work is permitted on the pressurized section of the line for the
duration of the test.
b) An adequately sized calibrated pressure safety valve shall be included in the circuit
c) Calibrated pressure gauges shall be used for the pressure leak test.
d) Pressure test requires careful supervision because of the potential hazard in the
event of a failure
e) The boundaries of the test equipment area shall be defined by marked tapes

IV. EQUIPMENT CONSIDERATION

Before proceeding with the actual test, it has to be confirmed that all fittings with respect
with the piping network has been installed and completed. All connections have to be
checked as per the design drawings including all the required supports and accessories.
Pressure gauges, all hoses, valves etc to be used for the testing purpose shall have a valid
certificate duly attested by 3rd party.

V. TEST PREPARATION

Ascertain that the test cylinders are filled with compressed (Nitrogen) at least 1000 psi.
The piping shall be pneumatically tested in a closed circuit for a period of 10 minutes at
40psig (276kPa) as per NFPA 2001 Clause 7.7.2.4.12
A minimum of two pressure gauges shall be used for testing
Pressure gauge for testing shall be minimum 6” dial size & calibrated prior to use by
authorized calibrating facility/agency.
Testing equipment shall have a valid calibration certificate from Calibration laboratories
shall be competent and accredited in accordance with the requirement of BSEN ISO/IEC
17025 Standard.
Pressure gauge shall have a range such that the test pressure 30% to 70% of the full range
and it shall have a valid calibration certificate
All openings/nozzle out-let shall be closed leaving the end point for the monitoring
pressure gauge connection.

VI. LEAK TEST STEPS

After ensuring all required materials and installation completed the actual test can now
proceed.

a. Connect the test cylinder near the main header via flexible connecting pipe.
b. With the regulator attached to the main header, slowly open the valve filling the pipe
network with compressed nitrogen. At the end of the pipe where test pressure gauge
located shall be 40psi (NFPA 2001 Clause 7.7.2.4.12.1).
c. Record the test pressure to be considered as the test base point. Observed any
pressure drop and shall be recorded as time elapse.
VENDOR DOCUMENT REVIEW COVER SHEET

d. Keep the pipe network under pressure at least 10 minutes.

e. Test Duration shall be minimum 10 min. or the minimum time to check the joints
whichever is more. Within this period, soap test must be applied on every joint to
verify any leakage.
f. After removing the source of pressurizing gas, the pressure in the pipe shall not be
less than 80% of the test pressure after 10 minutes(NFPA 2001 Clause 7.7.2.4.12.2).

VII. ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA

a. The leak test shall be accepted only if the test result is as specified on NFPA 2001
Clause 7.7.2.4.12.2
b. For a reading of pressure drop exceeding 20% of test pressure, a thorough inspection
shall be conducted to make necessary rectification. After rectification, another test
shall be done until proper results are achieved as described on the above LEAK TEST
STEPS
c. Visible leak during Pneumatic test is not acceptable.

VIII. POST TEST ACTIVITIES

a. After recording the data, the test gas shall be released normalizing the pipe network
b. Disconnect all testing devices installed and the piping network is now ready for
properly connecting to the cylinder bank. And the nozzles can now be fixed.
