Activity Sheet No. 1

Key Concepts:
1. Relation
 An association or pairing of some kind
between two sets of quantities or information.
What  A rule that relates values from a set of values

I
(called the domain) to a second set of values
(called the range).
Know  A set of ordered pairs (x,y).
 A mapping, or pairing, of input values with
output values.
 The relation may be one – to – one, many – to
– one or one – to – many.
2. Function
 A relation where each element in the domain is related to only
one value in the range by some rule.
 A set of ordered pairs (x,y) such that no two ordered pairs have
the same x-value but different y-values.
 A well-defined relation where no two ordered pairs have the
same first element.
 A special kind of relation in which each member of the domain
is paired with exactly one element of the range.
 All functions are relations but some relations are not functions
 A set of ordered pairs represents a function if no two ordered
pairs have the same first elements or component.
3. The Vertical Line Test
 Used to determine whether the graph of a relation is a
function.
 If it is possible for a vertical line to intersect a graph at more
than one point, then the graph is NOT the graph of a function.
4. Domain
 The set of all possible values that the variable x can take.
 The set of all first elements in a relation
 The set of input values
5. Range
 The set of all possible values that the variable y can take
 The set of all the second elements in a relation.
 The set of output values

Generalization

: In mathematics, a relationship describes one quantity in terms of

another. On the other hand, a function is actually a “special” kind of relation
because it follows an extra rule. The concepts of functions were introduced
during your Grade 8. This activity sheet provides a review since a lot of complex
topics in upper-level math involve functions.

ENRICHMENT ACTIVITY 1 – TELL ME THE TRUTH What Can

Direction: Each trivia corresponds to a math question. Determine I Do
Whether the relation is a function or not by writing True or
With What
False on the column provided.
I Know
Answer Trivia 3 Math Questions

1. In space, you cannot cry. {(6,1) (7, 2) (8, 2) (9, 1)}

ENRICHMENT ACTIVITY 2 – FIND MY RESTRICTIONS!

Direction. Find the domain and/or range of the following relations.

1. {(January,Nestor), (July,Gerald), 2.
4 {(1,8), (-2,9), (3,10), (4,11), (1,12)}
(March,Cyril), (January,Nei),

ENRICHMENT ACTIVITY 3 – IS IT FUNCTIONAL?

Direction. Draw your function machine on the space provided below. It maybe a
factory, machine or anything that takes an input and produces an output.
Describe the operations in your machine.
5 You may include operations, steps,
stages etc. Be creative.
