Target Learners : Grade 12 - GAS Students


Quarter Module : 4th Quarter
Time allotment : 1 hour lecture

I.OBJECTIVES
A. Content Standards: The learners understand media and information codes, conventions, and
messages in relation to consumers, producers, and other stakeholders.
B. Performance standards: The learners shall be able to examine and identify pertinent media and
information codes, conventions and messages given a visual resource.
C. Learning Competencies:
1. Evaluates everyday media and information presentations regarding codes, convention, and message;
and how they affect the audience, producers, and other stake holders.
2. Produces and assesses the codes, conventions, and messages of a group presentation.

MOTIVATION (10 MINUTES)
-Read the quote: “Language may be a source of
misunderstandings”, by Marshall McLuhan, 1964.
1. Let the learners analyze the quote and share what they
think to the class.
2.Does the user’s/audience’s own background or experience - Some student will raise their answers
affect the interpretation of messages? How?
3. Is it possible that a different individual derives a different
meaning from the message? Explain.

Media Codes and Conventions
- What is Media Language”?
*It is the way in which the media text is conveyed (express,
communicate) to the audience. It comprises (include) codes,
conventions, formats, symbols and narrative structures that
indicates the meaning of media messages to an audience.
Types of Media Language:
*Visual *Aural *Written *Verbal *Non-verbal
-What is Media Text?
*it is utilized to depict (show, describe) any media item.
Examples: TV programs, photos, adverts, film, radio
program, web pages, etc.
-What is Code?
*Systems of signs, which create meaning to communicate
ideas and impressions for an audience, producers, and other
stakeholders.
-TECHNICAL CODES focus on how media frames in visual
media are presented. Examples: camera angle, lens choice,
framing, shutter (sharpness of image) speed, depth of field,
lighting and exposure, juxtaposition (for similarity or
contrast)

- CAMERA MOVEMENTS:
*Pan – short for panorama. The camera moves horizontally
from a static position.
*Tilt – the camera moves vertically from a static position.
*Zoom – the change of focal length – close or far away
*Dolly – tracking shot. Camera moves on tracks/wheels to
give a smooth movement.
*Handheld – gives the frame a shaky look; POV (point of
view) shot.
-SYMBOLIC CODES indicators that require inferences or
suggestions among the audience, delving into the
connotative rather than the denotative. Examples: objects,
setting, body language, clothing, color.

- SEMIOTICS/SEMIOTIC THEORY- it is the study of signs and


symbols discusses the literal and potential meanings.

- WRITTEN CODES – the way titles/headlines are presented.


Examples: headlines, captions, speech bubbles, style.
- CONVENTION the generally accepted way of doing things.
It refers to a standard or norm that acts as a rule governing
behavior.
