LEARNING MODULES IN SCIENCE 4

UNIT 1:
Characteristic
Have you ever wondered how things around you came into existence? How they
all began? Everything around us has its origin, its beginning, and even its purpose.
There are so many reasons for its existence. And you always ask these question, “how
and why”. So let’s continue to search for the truth; and this truth is what we called
Science.

UNIT MAP

MODULE 1 Classifying Different Materials Based on Their Properties

(3 sessions)

I. Introduction

Matter, is everywhere. It is found around you in different forms. The clothes you
wear, the places where you live, the water you drink, and even the air you breathe are
all matter. The materials you see around you are made up of matter.

II. Standards

Content Standards:
The learner demonstrate an understanding of grouping different materials based
on their properties.

Performance Standards:
The learner is able to recognize and practice proper handling of products
according to their properties.

Formation Standards:
The learner use their knowledge to minimize waste at home, in school, and in the
community.

III. Most Essential Learning Competency

To do well in this module, you need to remember and do the following:

classify materials based on the ability to absorb water, float, sink, undergo decay

IV. Essential Questions:

As you go through in this module, you will be able to answer the following
questions:

How do the properties of materials determine their materials?

Why is it important to classify materials?
When are changes useful, and when are they harmful?
What are the different classifications of matter based on their physical and
chemical properties?

Enduring Understanding

Within and after accomplishing this module, you will have the following
takeaways that can be considered as your lifelong learning:

The structure of materials determine their properties.

Matter exist in different forms: solids, liquids, and gases
Matter have their own characteristics and properties that make them unique

V. Specific Objectives:

In this module, you will learn the following:

classify materials based on the ability to absorb water, float, sink, undergo decay;
identify the effects of decaying materials on one’s health and safety; and
demonstrate disposal of waste according to the properties of materials
VI. Pre-assessment

Answer the following questions below. After answering, copy and paste this in a Word
File using a short bond paper then submit the Pre-Assessment Activity to your teacher
via designated drop points or in the messenger

VIII. Learning Activities

Answer the following activities and submit it to your teacher via online or in
designated drop points.

A. Learning Activity 1: Will it Float or Sink?

Directions: For each object, make a prediction as to whether the object will sink or float
when place in water. Record your prediction in the middle column by writing either “S”
for sink or “F” for float. Place the object into water and then record the results in the right
column.

Name of object My prediction Result

2.

3.

4.
5.

B. Learning Activity 2: Uses of Absorbent Materials

Find these objects in your home. What are they used for? Why?
The first one has been done for you as an example.

Object Use Material Why it is good for this

use?

1. Towel To dry your body Fabric Because it is absorbent

2. mop

3. kitchen sponge

4. tissue

5. Bath mat

C. Learning Activity 3: What is My Texture?

Choose a material to investigate. Once you have your material, complete the table
below by putting a check in the Yes or No box for each property.

My material is ___________________________

Property Yes No

D. Learning Activity 4: Decaying or Non-decaying?

Classify materials that undergo decaying and non-decaying. Choose your answer inside
the box below.

Materials that undergo decay Materials that do not undergo decay

E. Learning Activity 5: Let’s reflect!

Make a reflection: complete the statement below. Write your answer at least 3 to 4
sentences.
