Reading Wonder is a little like getting to read excerpts from six different diaries.
And though Auggie's story gets expanded by each different narrator, the narrators
always start out by talking about something important to him or her. It's so
effective: simultaneous plot and character development. Moreover, R.J. Palacio
cleverly uses language to command attention from her readers. Some of these
techniques are: simile, metaphor, personification, irony, and imagery.
Activity 1: Refer to the table of LANGUAGE FEATURES that your teacher will give you,
and identify the following as simile, metaphor, personification, irony, or imagery.
1. Henry, Miles, and Amos were three of the boys who primarily hung out with
Julian at the beginning of the school year, boys who sided with him during the
"war" against Jack and who made fun of Auggie. At the end of the novel, they
are the ones to come to Auggie and Jack's rescue at the nature reserve.
6. "It had been a long time since I'd been out without my hearing aids, and it felt
like I was miles under the earth."
7. "[His eyes] slant downward at an extreme angle, almost like diagonal slits that
someone cut into his face, and the left one is noticeably lower than the right
one.”
8. "Summer looked like her name. She had a tan, and her eyes were green like a
leaf”
9. "It looked like someone had taken sidewalk chalk and smudged the colors
across the sky with their fingers.”
10. "I painted LIGHTNING in gold letters on the middle piece of wood, and I made
a little lightning-bolt symbol above the letters"
