The United States History of Education

The foundations of education in the United States has had undergone a lot

dramatic transformations reflecting changes in the social life and culture of the nation

and covering the trends in educational philosophy, policy, institutions, as well as formal

and informal learning in America from the 17th century to the 21 st century. For me, the

foundation of education in the United States hasn’t started good yet it has become one

important thing to know as to how they were introduced to a deep rooted faith.

Adjustments of educational system were made in order to cater the learner's needs the

best way that they can. The school curriculum timeline started from family and religion

to digital literacy.

Just as we expected to a certain country, education in the United States was not

required during the old times. The most obvious influence on education was the

presence of numerous religious sects. These sects, or religious denominations,

included the Puritans that’s why their main purpose of education during those times was

to teach children how to read the Bible and how to align themselves to puritan morals.

All educational teaching was a type of religious instruction, and the intent clearly was to

preserve the Puritan culture. After that, they had evolved from a wilderness setting into

growing political and religious communities of many settlers. One by one, villages

established schools. Even so, education that time was still not that really considered

important. In 1636, Harvard became the first college established. And as the colony

drew more educated settlers from graduated teachers from Harvard, the quality of

education increasingly improved. The late nineteenth century began to show signs of

the progressive school systems that were to evolve in the twentieth century. The first

public schools in the United States was established in 1821. During 1867, there were

significant events happened wherein The Department of Education was created in order

to help states establish effective school systems. After hearing of the desperate

situation facing schools in the south, George Peabody funds the two-million-dollar

Peabody Education Fund to aid public education in southern states. Also, Howard

University was established in Washington D.C. to provide education for African

American youth "in the liberal arts and sciences.” However, many schools during the

1870s closed because they lacked funds and it was only then 1920s where they once

again bounced back. In the modern times, technology is rapidly changing the way

students learn and how instructors teach. Computers have replaced chalkboards as the

go-to tool in classrooms. Beginning in the 1980s, government, educators, and major

employers issued a series of reports identifying key skills and implementation

strategies.

As a conclusion, the widespread excitement are felt around the transformative

potential of technology in United States education since the internet exploded onto the

scene in the ’80s and ’90s, and became accessible. The educational history timeline of

the United States has greatly evolved. Computer-aided instructions became common

from K to 12 to higher education. The higher-order skills, abilities, and learning

dispositions has now been identified as a requirements for success in 21st century

society and workplaces by educators. Education has played an integral part in the

American society. Their deep dedication to influence and transform young minds

motivates other countries to continue exploring more to help our educational system be

progressive as the years goes by.
