Assessment FOR Assessment OF
Assessment Tool Brief Description Learning Learning

During lessons students will complete questions on

their personal whiteboards. I will ask students to
Whiteboards hold up their answers which will allow me to quickly X
assess how many students have grasped a concept
and where they might be struggling.

Each student will have a fraction book that will act

like a math journal. In this book students will

write/draw their thoughts, feelings, questions and
daily tasks..

Students will use the interactive Polypad from

Polypad Mathigon website to discover equivalent fractions X
and demonstrate comparing fractions.

Students will use circles, squares and rectangles to

create a fraction picture. In this picture students
will use fractions (half, thirds, quarters, etc.) of the
Fraction Pictures X
given shapes to create an image (clown, animal,
house, etc.). Once the image is created students will
label each fraction used.

At multiple points throughout this unit students will

be given worksheets to complete to show what

Outcome(s):
Grade 4:
8. Demonstrate an understanding of fractions less than or equal to
one by using concrete, pictorial and symbolic representations to:
● Name and record fractions for the parts of a whole or a set
● Compare and order fractions
● Model and explain that for different wholes, two identical
fractions may not represent the same quantity
● Provide examples of where fractions are used
Grade 5:
Introduction to 7. Demonstrate an understanding of fractions by using concrete,
1
Fractions pictorial and symbolic representations to:
● Create sets of equivalent fractions
● Compare fractions with like and unlike denominators

Overview: As a class we will brainstorm what they already know about

fractions (what they look like, where they are used, etc.). After
brainstorming I will introduce what a fraction looks like and the
corresponding terminally - numerator, denominator. Ensure that
students understand that fractions mean a whole is equally split/shared.

Grade 5:
7. Demonstrate an understanding of fractions by using concrete,
pictorial and symbolic representations to:
● Create sets of equivalent fractions
● Compare fractions with like and unlike denominators

Overview: Students will use geoboards to create fractions. This will help
students to understand that the same fraction can be represented
differently (a square can be divided into four parts vertically and
horizontal or on diagonal)
